William H. Wilson, firefighter, handyman
William Hugh Wilson led a busy life as a firefighter, plumber, handyman and outdoor enthusiast.
"He was one of a kind, " said Mr. Wilson's wife of 49 years, Sylvia Marie Wilson. "Everybody liked him. Anywhere you went, he always knew somebody."
Mr. Wilson, 69, of Covington, died Wednesday at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was a firefighter with the Covington Fire Department for 30 years and during that time also worked as a licensed plumber.
Mr. Wilson was a member of the Retired Firefighters Union and belonged to St. Benedict's Church in Covington, where he was a former usher, and was a member of St. Benedict's Holy Name Society.
"He just loved being a firefighter, " said Mrs. Wilson. "He worked at every firehouse in Covington at one time or another.
"He once saved the lives of a couple of children by taking them out the window of a second-story building. He was never afraid to climb ladders or jump out windows for training."
After working a 24-hour shift as a firefighter, Mr. Wilson would come home and then begin work at his second job as a plumber.
"He could fix anything and if he couldn't fix it, he would find out how to fix it, " said his wife. "He also could teach anybody how to fix anything. He would draw you a picture and show you what to do. If you needed help, he would give it to you."
Mr. Wilson loved spending time outdoors.
"He enjoyed boating and swimming and camping, " said Mrs. Wilson. "He took our kids camping and taught them how to swim and water ski. He loved the water and was a beautiful swimmer."
Mr. Wilson also played guitar and especially enjoyed country and bluegrass music.
Other survivors include daughters, Anita Piner, Patricia Wilson and Carol Wilson, all of Covington, Catherine Thornberry of Independence and Anna Jenne of Clearwater, Fla.; sons, William P. Wilson of Alexandria, Michael Wilson and Jeffrey Wilson, both of Covington; a sister, Joyce Gunby of Decatur, Ga.; brothers, James Wilson of Cincinnati, Douglas Wilson of Alexandria and Jerry Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Benedict Church.
A reception at Holy Family School will follow the services.

Roy "Randy" Randall Cason, 72, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired yard conductor with ConRail, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Covington and an Army veteran of the Korean War. A son, Daniel J. Cason, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jane Cason; sons, Rick Cason of Alexandria and William Scott of Land O' Lakes, Fla.; a sister, Lou Marksberry of Florence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Elizabeth M. Egan, 94, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann Altar Society. Her husband, James D. Egan, died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Betsy Brewer of Ludlow; a son, James J. Egan of North Chelmsford, Mass.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Evelyn Townsend Huff, 86, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Trilogy at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
She was a retired employee of Columbia Gas Co. and a member of First United Methodist Church of Cynthiana. Her husband, L.A. Huff, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sisters, Katherine Midden and Dorothy Mooney, both of Cynthiana.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Mary F. Dorsey Hutton, 77, of Latonia, died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday at her daughter's home in Puyallup, Wash.
She was a day care worker with First Methodist Church, Covington, and a member of First Church of God, Latonia. She was a member of the 50 Plus Club at Holy Cross Church in Latonia, the Young at Heart Club at Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Busy Fingers Club at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. Her husband, Glenmore E. Hutton, died in 1980. A daughter, Charlotte Hutton, died in 1949. A son, Glenn Wayne Hutton, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Clara C. Poe of Puyallup; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God, Latonia.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Virginia R. Reed Kaiser, 83, of Latonia, died Wednesday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

Byron Edward Smith, 61, of Union, died Friday in Lahaina Maui, Hawaii.
He was a truck driver and a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Lila Smith, and a sister, Joyce Ann Holyke of Erlanger.

Fred H. Taulbee, 85, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a repairman with Hagedorn's appliance store and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Leona Taulbee, died in 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Lidinsky of Meridian, Idaho; a son, Dennis L. Taulbee of Midway; and a sister, Mitzi Turner of Sarasota, Fla.

George Wischer, 89, of Covington, died at midnight Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired pattern maker with Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati.
His wife, Juanita Wischer, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a cousin, June Suedkamp of Crescent Springs.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
