Alex Papas, led candy firm, helped needy
Alex C. Papas had a heart as sweet as his business.
Mr. Papas, who built his father's candy-making venture in Covington into a regionally known confectionary manufacturer, was a quiet benefactor to employees and friends and family.
He swore many of the people he helped to secrecy that was broken only after his death Monday at age 84 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Beneficiaries of his kindness included employees he helped to buy houses by loaning them money or co-signing loans, people he put up in his own home, and his five children and 10 grandchildren, all of whom he made sure had the means to attend college.
"There are things he did we are just finding out about now, " said a son, Chris Papas of Villa Hills. "He regularly helped many people in need."
Mr. Papas went to work in his father's business at age 13 -- he dropped out of school in the eighth grade -- and for the next 69 years was intricately involved in its operation.
He helped make the opera cream Easter eggs and other chocolates that were the firm's staples. In 1957, with the company growing, he designed and help build a new plant on Baker Street in West Covington. He also designed and helped construct manufacturing machinery for the plant, some of which is still used today.
He officially retired at age 65, but stayed busy at Papas Candy Co. for 14 more years, calling on customers, making deliveries and doing other jobs.
"It was his baby and he wasn't about to let it go, " said Chris Papas.
Mr. Papas, of Crestview Hills, only started to step back from the business about five years ago, motivated by health problems and a desire to spend more time at the Florida home where he and his wife, Ann, wintered.
Mr. Papas was an Army veteran of World War II, in which he fought in some of the most bitterly contested battles. Included was D-Day, when he landed on Omaha Beach and was listed as missing in action for several days, and the Battle of the Bulge. He received four Bronze Stars, among other medals, for his service.
"He told us late in life he was blessed, that he should have been killed with some of his buddies in those battles, " said Chris Papas.
Although he was immersed in his work, Mr. Papas was accomplished in other areas. He was a good golfer -- he was a member of Summit Hills Country Club for 37 years -- and an expert ballroom dancer, winning many competitions with his wife, whom he met roller-skated.
After he retired, he learned to make stained-glass windows. His creations now grace the homes of all five of his children and several of his workers at the candy company.
He was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and battled it into remission before it returned about eight months ago.
In the end, he pronounced his life all that he had hoped for.
"Dad said to his children, "I've done everything, seen everything, I have no regrets, '" said Chris Papas.
Surviving in addition to Mr. Papas' son and his wife are two daughters, Connie Papas of Goshen, Ohio, and Pam Stenger of Walton; two other sons, Carl Papas of Edgewood and Mark Papas of Crestview Hills; two sisters, Joyce Papas of San Francisco and Rita Collister of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.
