Robert J. Madden, 87, known for compassion

A really nice guy from Bellevue died Friday.

That's the way Robert J. Madden, 87, was described by everyone who knew him, according to his son, Martin Madden, also of Bellevue.

"Dad was one of those guys who didn't have an enemy in the world, " said Madden.

"Even as a POW guard in World War II, he earned the respect and admiration of the (German) prisoners."

Mr. Madden served with the Army in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany, his son said.

One of Madden's most cherished remembrances of his father is a bowl that a prisoner carved for him. It is inscribed "Rat killer Robert Madden."

"Dad was a Christian man who wanted to do his duty as a soldier but didn't like to see anyone suffer, " Madden explained.

"He tried to make the prisoners more comfortable by shooting the rats that infested the prison, and the prisoner showed his gratitude by carving the bowl."

Madden said that compassion came through in everything his father did, whether it was raising his children or volunteering for the Holy Name Society or the Bellevue Vets.

Mr. Madden was a lifetime member of the Vets and was routinely the top ticket seller at the festival.

Mr. Madden moved to Bellevue in 1961 and lived there until about eight years ago when health problems made necessary a move to Ivy Woods Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Cincinnati, where he died.
