Valta Jean Neiser, upholsterer, volunteer
Valta Jean Neiser taught her son, Mitch, everything he knows about carpentry.
The mother-son duo built a barn and garage together. She added a room onto her Alexandria home. And, before she died Monday at home at the age of 72, Mrs. Neiser had been remodeling her kitchen.
Not just a coat of paint, either. She built cabinets from scratch and installed the trim, tiling and new appliances.
"People would ask me what I'd get my mother for Christmas, and I'd tell them a circular saw, " he said. "That's what she wanted."
Mrs. Neiser was independent and if she wanted something done, she learned how to do it and did it herself.
"She was a women's libber before there was women's lib, " her son said.
When Mitch was little in the 1950s, she wanted a new couch, but the family couldn't afford it.
So one day when her husband Roy, who died in 2001, went to work, she tore the sofa apart and taught herself upholstery.
That was the beginning of a career as a self-employed upholsterer. Her son said she was so good at it that people would wait up to two years for her to fit their project into her schedule.
"I can't think of anything the woman couldn't do, " he said.
Mrs. Neiser also excelled at sewing, making all of her own clothes and creating period costumes that she would wear at Tall Stacks.
The list of community organizations she was involved with is exhaustive. She helped found the Campbell County Historical Society and was past president of the Alexandria Fair Board.
She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Fort Thomas, Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 Ladies Auxiliary, Campbell County Homemakers and Kentucky Homemakers.
She volunteered at the election polls in Alexandria and was a crossing guard in front of Alexandria Elementary School on Washington Street for several years.
"She was 90 mph with her hair on fire all the time, " her son said.
A son, Dennis Neiser, also preceded her in death.
