Dr. Macel Wheeler, geography professor
Dr. Macel Marteva Wheeler was always doing good deeds for other people.
When a crew installed new windows at her mother's house in Ravenswood, W.Va.., Dr. Wheeler sent the workers thank-you notes and gift certificates to Red Lobster.

The summer after Dr. Wheeler graduated from high school, she, her mother and sister shared an apartment and attended classes together at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.
"We had a wonderful time together, " her mother said of that summer.
Dr. Wheeler received her bachelor's and master's degrees in geography from Marshall and her doctorate in geography from the University of Kentucky.
The fun the mother and daughters had that summer carried on.
Dr. Wheeler's favorite thing to do was eating a picnic lunch with her mother at a park along the Ohio River in West Virginia.
The two did that almost every weekend over the summer, spending the time talking, laughing and watching the boats and birds go by.
"She and I were like sisters, not mother and daughter, " her mother said.
