Robert Bluhm, police detective, veteran
Robert Bluhm's proudest moment as a Cincinnati police detective was arresting Posteal Laskey, otherwise known as the "Cincinnati Strangler" in 1966.
Bluhm helped catch Laskey, who was convicted of one of seven murders attributed to him. Bluhm also cracked many other high-profile cases while he worked on all squads at detective headquarters and the criminal investigations section.
"He was very proud of his police work, " his niece, Kim Steffen, of Edgewood, said.
Mr. Bluhm, 79, died Tuesday at his Alexandria home.
He enjoyed sharing stories about his days as a crime solver, his niece said.
"He was a very smart man, " she said. "I think that challenged him, trying to solve a mystery."
He also enjoyed sharing stories about his time in the Navy Gulf Patrol during World War II. He was a crewmember on a PBY-5A Catalina attached to an air/sea rescue squad.
Before joining the police force, he was a printer in the composing room of the now-defunct Times-Star newspaper.
After retiring from the police force, Mr. Bluhm did part-time security work at the Cincinnati Art Museum and golfed several days a week.
Describing her uncle as an avid golfer, his niece said he and his wife, Dorothy, lived in Florida in the winters so he could golf. He won several golf club championships over the years.
Mr. Bluhm, who was normally a quiet guy, could get revved up in a conversation about politics, she said.
"He was very proud to be an American and loved the political scene, " she said. "He was a very avid Republican."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Stephen of San Diego and four grandchildren.
