Michael Wayne Landers was retired firefighter
When Michael Wayne Landers married
his wife, Mary, on June 28, 1974, a justice of the peace performed the ceremony at the Quality Inn in Covington.
Thirty years later, the Covington residents renewed their vows in front of a priest in a Catholic church in Port Orange, Fla., where they owned a second home.
When Mr. Landers became ill with pancreatic cancer 17 months ago, he wanted to be sure that God recognized his marriage, said his daughter, Ti-Ata Couch of Erlanger.
When he was diagnosed, the doctors gave Mr. Landers only six months to live, but the 65-year-old beat their estimate, dying Wednesday at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
"Mom's heart is broken today, " Couch said. "I'm not sure she'll ever mend."
Mr. Landers grew up in the Latonia area and graduated from Covington Holmes High School. He worked briefly for the Taylor Mill Fire Department, then served 27 years with the Covington Fire Department, retiring in 1993 as a lieutenant.
He loved the closeness of his brothers, as he called his fellow firefighters. When he needed help because of his illness, they were there to help him, his daughter said.
After retirement, he spent most days on the golf links, either playing or maintaining the greens at Twin Oaks Golf Club. He would always say the club didn't have to pay him because he loved the job so much, his daughter said.
Mr. Landers had his share of tragedy.
In 1990, another daughter, Diana Isaacson, died in a fire at her Cambridge Square apartment, along with her two children. A son, Michael Landers, 13, a member of the Covington Holmes wrestling team, died of a brain aneurysm during practice.
During his own illness, he tried not to let on how much pain he was in. "He fought hard, and stayed strong for his family, " Couch said.
