Jack Wright, opened home for Vietnam boy
Jack Wright once brought home a Vietnamese boy who had been sleeping on a picnic table.
Described by his family as a Good Samaritan, he let the boy who could barely speak English stay at their home while he was going to school.
"He was just the type of person that was aware of others' needs, " his daughter Paula Volz, of Union, said.
Mr. Wright, 75, died Monday afternoon at his home in Union.
Volz said he often brought people he encountered on his milk delivery route home for a hot meal and warm place to sleep. With nine children already in the house, his daughter said he thought: "What's one more?"
A milkman for Trauth Dairy in Newport for 30 years, Mr. Wright also usually had a part-time job at night to support his wife, Mary, and children.
He did everything from selling insurance and draperies to cutting meat at Kroger.
"He provided for us and still had time for us, " Volz said. "We couldn't have asked for a better father."
Mr. Wright also made time for golf. His passion for the sport started when he was a 13-year-old caddy at Twin Oaks Golf Club.
He went on to win the Northern Kentucky High School Golf Championship, several championships as an adult at local courses and was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
At 71, he shot his age.
"He loved golf his whole life, " Volz said. "When he retired he could play a lot more."
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by five daughters, Andy Hutchins of Piner, Sue McGovern of Villa Hills, Sally Rohlman, of Erlanger, Cindy Clarke of Villa Hills and Laurie Driscoll of Union; three sons, John Wright of Jeffersonville, Ind., Mike Wright of New Castle and Jeff Wright of Corinth; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
