Rosemary Schulte, medical researcher
Rosemary Schulte was a medical researcher with an unassuming personality.
"Medicine was her life, but she never talked about her accomplishments, " said Mrs. Schulte's son, Denis Schulte of Latonia. "She didn't like the spotlight."
Mrs. Schulte, 84, of Latonia, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She had been the first baby born at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington on May 6, 1920.
Mrs. Schulte did kidney research at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati and then spent more than 20 years in bio-research at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
"She won an award for a kidney research project, but she never talked about it, " said her son. "That's just the way she was. Very low key. Very down to earth."
Mrs. Schulte grew up during the Depression and was a young adult during the economic constraints of the World War II era.
"She had a rough life early on and it was quite an accomplishment for her to graduate from college, " her son said.
Mrs. Schulte graduated from Villa Madonna College, now Thomas More College.
Away from work, she enjoyed gardening.
"That was her passion, " said her son. "She grew vegetables and flowers. She could grow just about anything."
Mrs. Schulte enjoyed reading, especially about one of her great interests, alternative medicine. She also liked spending time in Florida and was a fan of popular music from the 1940s and '50s.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia.
Mrs. Schulte was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph John Schulte, in 1987.
Other survivors include a son, David Schulte of Walton; sisters, Teresa Childers of Fort Thomas, Margaret Ann Schultz of Fort Thomas and Joanne Franklin of Sharonville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
There will be a Memorial Catholic Blessing at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mother of God cemetery Chapel in Fort Wright. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery.
Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling the arrangements.

Charlene Mae Agrue, 61, of Burlington, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Grover Agrue; sons, Andy Agrue, Danny Agrue and Jesse Agrue, all of Owenton, and Darryl Fugate and Jeff Fugate, both of Burlington; a daughter, Jackie Collett of Florence; brothers, Eddie Cox of Austin, Texas, and James Cox of Illinois; sisters, Cynthia Basye of Dry Ridge, Renie Cox of Fort Mitchell, Sylvia Hastings of Demossville, Barb Pippin of Dry Ridge, and Janice Schultz of West Chester, Ohio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Anna Lee Turner Cook, 86, of Elsmere, died at 6:20 p.m. Saturday at Woodcrest Manor Nursing Home, Elsmere. She was a retired nursing home attendant, and a member of Pilot Baptist Church in Eubank and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, David L. Cook, died in 2002.
Survivors include daughters, Joanne Bossard of Owasso, Okla., and Dorothy M. Wesley of Cincinnati; sons, Royce V. Austin of Springville, Tenn., and Charles D. Austin of Erlanger; sisters, Orpha Adams of Ryland Heights and Dorothy Cook of Sellersburg, Ind.; a brother, Carl Turner of Union; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at noon Thursday at Pisgah Cemetery, Atwood, Tenn. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Estelle G. Crouch, 91, of Ryland Heights, died Friday at her home. She was a special education teacher with Kenton County Schools and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.
Survivors include sons, James B. Crouch of Ryland Heights and Charles W. Crouch of Latonia; a daughter, Barbara Jean Young of Independence; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pauline C. Eilers, 86, of Covington, died Saturday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a homemaker and a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and the Democratic Women's Club. Her husband, Elmer W. Eilers, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Ronald F. Eilers of Orlando, Fla., and Gerhard W. Eilers of Villa Hills; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Edward "Chap" Ford, 73, of Newport, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired factory worker with Kent Corp.
Survivors include sisters, Jackie Smith of Fort Thomas, Carol Mulcahy of Newport and Mary Farmer of Latonia; and three grandsons.

Louise Head, 96, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., formerly of Ghent, died Thursday at Hawthorne Inn, Hilton Head. She was a homemaker and volunteer, a former board member of the Covington Ladies Home and charter member of the Fort Mitchell Country Club. She was a member of Lakeside Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution. Her husband, William Mack Head, died in 1988.
Survivors include a son, Bill Head of Hilton Head; and two grandchildren.

Portia Irene Ivy, 57, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:50 a.m. Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a caregiver for Alzheimer's Disease patients.

Carol Lynn McDaniel, 56, of Elsmere, died at 9 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a former medical office secretary and a member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, April Thiede of Crittenden; a son, Doug McDaniel of Independence; sisters, Barbara McDaniel of Williamstown and Brenda Hathaway of Povina Center, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

Gladys Elizabeth McKibben, 95, of Newport, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Orel Ellis Poore, 91, of Jeffersonville, Ind., formerly of Grant County, died Saturday at his home. He was the retired owner of Luxury Marine and a sales distributor with Lifeguard. His wife, Belle Poore, died in 1984. Sons, Orel E. Poore Jr. and Lloyd G. Poore, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, J. Yvonne McNeal of New Albany, Ind., and Kye K. Hoehn of Jeffersonville; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Della Miller Sebree, 90, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church. She was a former teacher and a member of the Grant County Homemakers Club. Her husband, Roscoe Sebree, died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Sebree of Avon, Ind.; daughters, Wanda Reffett of Sarasota, Fla., and Patty Smallwood of London; brothers, Edgar Miller of Florence and Ernest Miller of Cincinnati; sisters, Mildred Boggs of Phoenix and Ada Williams of Middletown, Ohio; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Philip E. Siefke Sr., 62, of Florence, died Thursday at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Holthaus Siefke; a daughter, Traci Siefke of Columbus, Ohio; sons, Philip Siefke Jr. of Winterhaven, Fla., and William Robert Siefke of Lakeland, Fla.; a brother, Robert Siefke; sisters, Gertrude Roesch, Catherine Brock and Elizabeth Patterson; and six grandchildren.

Doris Marie Spaulding Smith, 72, of Owenton, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Smith; a daughter, Cathy Alford of Owenton; a son, Ricky Smith of Owenton; a brother, Perry Spaulding Sr. of Sheperdsville; a sister, Aldean Hamilton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lonnie Joseph Stephens, 78, of Bellevue, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired truck driver with A.R. Nagel Heating and Piping Co., Cincinnati, and a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service, Union Terminal in Cincinnati. He was a member of Gertrude Chapter No. 19 Order of the Eastern Star, Newport Masonic Lodge No. 358 and the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Covington. He was a World War II veteran. His son, Lonnie J. Stephens II, died in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Mable Stephens; daughters, Deborah Willis of California, Mable Catherine Green of St. Petersburg, Fla., Betty Jo Turner of Butler, Theresa Garlet of Evansville, Ind., Anna Stephens of Newport and Linda Martin of Norwood, Ohio; a sister, Sarah Dunckley of Falmouth; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Charles S. Tungate, 78, of Crittenden, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. He was a customer service agent with Delta Airlines and a member of Crittenden Baptist Church.

Robert L. Wade, 91, of Cynthiana, died Friday. He was a retired farmer and Harrison County Schools bus driver, and a deacon of Pleasant Green Baptist Church. His wife, Emma Lou Withers Wade, and son, Robert Dale Wade, both preceded him in death.
