Cherryl Hitch, painter, teacher, caregiver
Cherryl Hitch of Edgewood spent her life caring for others. When she died Friday, after a long battle with cancer, she had learned how to accept help graciously from others, but had never stopped extending her own hand.
"She never complained. She was able to find God's hand in everything, " said her husband, Larry Hitch.
"Everybody has been encouraged by her courage."
Mrs. Hitch, 56, was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago. Her journey included alternative medicines as well as traditional treatments. She dealt with brittle bones, a spinal injury and tumor that left her paralyzed, and what appeared to be a miraculous recovery.
"She would share her story at women's groups and we'd talk together at businessmen's meetings, " said her husband. Visits with Cherryl always ended in ministry. "When people talk with Cherryl, God shows up and things happen, " Larry Hitch said.
Visitors would come to pray about Cherryl's needs, but they ended up praying for the needs of everybody else, he added.
Their pastor, Bo Weaver of the Fellowship of Believers Church in Florence, recalled a time several years ago when doctors had given Cherryl Hitch a dire prognosis.
"Several of us decided to go over to their house and pray for Cherryl. I was expecting to find her very scared or upset. But she was laughing and cutting up like always. We prayed together, and then she jumped up and started slicing pie for us. We thought we'd be spending a sad and uncomfortable night, but we were eating pumpkin pie and enjoying fellowship, " Weaver said.
"She was always thinking of the other person, always trying to make someone else feel comfortable, " Weaver said.
Cherryl Hitch met life's challenges head on. She was a painter and had been an art teacher at Campbell County High School and Holmes High School, but left teaching to become a full-time mother when their son, Brian, was born with cerebral palsy.
"She became Brian's caregiver, " Larry Hitch said. She did the same when other family members needed help. When Larry's father became ill, he moved into the Hitch home and became part of the family. Weaver recalled the day the elder Hitch dug up Cherryl's garden to plant tomato plants. "She just laughed and said she's glad he feels at home, " Weaver said.
When Brian died in 1990 at age 14, the Hitches memorialized him by building a handicapped accessible playground at their church. The project became a churchwide effort that drew members together in a God-centered mission, said Larry Hitch.
After Brian's death, Cherryl worked with special-needs children at A. J. Lindeman Elementary School in Erlanger.
