Drew Smith, only lung disorder slowed him
Drew Smith was not a person who liked to sit still.
He rode motorcycles, loved to hunt, was active in a Civil War group and deeply involved in the Newport Elks Lodge.
Even in his 21-year career as a patrol officer in the Fort Thomas Police Department he was more often than not on the move.
"He was never a couch potato, " said his wife, Karen Smith
Mr. Smith, of Alexandria, died at 12:57 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 58.
He worked for Christ Hospital and Cincinnati Bell before fulfilling a life-long dream in 1970 and becoming a police officer in Fort Thomas.
When he retired in 1991, it was not to take it easy. He went back to work selling real estate for several firms, including Coldwell Banker and West Shell.
In his spare time both before and after retirement, he was a member of the North-South Skirmish Association, a Civil War group that stages black powder shooting competitions around the country. He also was a big collector of Civil War memorabilia, including guns, swords and knives.
"He was always a Civil War buff, " said his wife.
His interest in guns started with his fondness for hunting, she said. He hunted during several seasons, she said, including deer, squirrel and rabbit.
Another of Mr. Smith's passions was Elks Lodge 273 in Newport. He was a member for 18 years and a former exalted ruler there.
"He was attracted to that because they did a lot of charitable work, " Karen Smith said.
Mr. Smith didn't finally slow down until health problems forced him to. He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a degenerative lung disorder in 1996.
"That was very hard on him because he was used to being so active, " Karen Smith said.
