John Carroll, family focus of hard work
John D. Carroll worked three jobs so he could send his children to Catholic school.
He delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service, delivered flowers on holidays, when the post office doesn't deliver mail and tended bar on weekends.
"He was a very faithful person, " his son Shawn, of Florence, said.
Mr. Carroll, 85, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington.
Dad still found time to spend with his four children, despite working three jobs, his son said. He even coached Knothole baseball and youth basketball when his kids were on the teams.
Mr. Carroll was an avid sports fan, always cheering on local teams, including the Reds and Bengals. He attended the Reds' opening day for 50 straight years.
"He knows everything there is to know about sports, " his son said.
His four children will remember the positive outlook and sarcastic personality their father had, even during his last days.
When Mr. Carroll returned as a Marine from Japan after World War II, he shattered his hip in a car accident.
"It basically took him a year before he could walk again, but it never stopped him, " his son Patrick, of Union, said.
Mr. Carroll served with the fifth regiment at Iwo Jima, and he earned numerous campaign ribbons, including the Presidential Citation and Occupation Ribbon for Japan.
He worked at the post office for 41 years.
Calling his dad the king of one-liners, Patrick said he was witty until the end. When a Hospice worker asked his father what they should do if his heart stopped, he retorted: "Please bury me."
"He just tried to brighten everybody's life every day, " Shawn said.
Mr. Carroll was a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
In addition to his two sons, survivors include son, Kevin Carroll of Darien, Conn.; a daughter, Peggy Nowak of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church, Florence. There is no visitation. Mr. Carroll's body will be donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Mary C. Davis, 95, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Saturday at her residence. Her husband, James B. Davis, and a son, Sgt. Paul P. Davis, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, J. Mike Davis, Richard Davis, David Davis, John Davis, and Francis Davis; daughters, Mary Louise Gallagher, Cathy Dooley, and Nancy Gillespie; a sister, Viola "Vi" Carrol; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bayley Place Enrichment Center, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Marshall A. Ebert, 79, of Owenton, died Saturday at the VA Medical Center. He was a retired welder and electrician, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Hesler Assembly of God, Owenton. His wife, Patricia Wilhelm Ebert, and his daughter, Sandra Ebert Woodarek, preceded him in death.
Survivors include stepsons, Roddy Roy of Owenton and Morris Roy of Orlando, Fla.; stepdaughters, Vickie Penn of Indianapolis, Ind., and Cindy McCracken of West Chester, Ohio; brothers, Alfred Ebert, Clair Ebert, Howard Ebert, Harry Ebert, and Sylvester Ebert; a sister, Beatrice Ebert; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family at O'Rourke Funeral Home, Little Valley, N.Y. Burial will be in Little Valley Rural Cemetery, Little Valley, N.Y. McDonald & New Funeral Home, Owenton, is handling the arrangements.
Edna Marie Hall, 80, of Covington, formerly of Florence, died Saturday at Rosedale Manor, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Mears of Fort Mitchell; and a grandson, Robert Aaron Mears of Ludlow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. There is no visitation. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling the arrangements.
Cora Stamper Keel, 70, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington. She was a retired machine tender for Duro Bag Co., Covington and a member of West Chester Old Regular Baptist Church, West Chester, Ohio, and Daylight Chapter O.E.S. Her husband, Sherman H. Keel, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Debbie Hale of Sanders and Janice Carol Cantrell of Taylor Mill; sisters, Lena Elswick of Burlington, Lola Mae Adams of Independence, Lorenda Cooper of Covington, and Novella Marshbanks of Florence; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, Ga. 30368.
Mel McCane, 57, of Lexington, formerly of Covington, died Friday at his residence. He was a self-employed computer consultant and the founder of WildcatFaithful.com.
Survivors include his stepmother, Violet McCane of Burlington; brothers, Jim McCane of Burlington and Gene Kindle of Erlanger; and sisters, Linda Boggs of Independence and Donna McCane of Burlington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jane T. Swartz, 80, of May's Lick, died Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was retired from J.C. Penny's, Maysville, and a member of May's Lick Christian Church. Her husband, Cecil T. Swartz, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Perry Swartz of May's Lick and Larry Swartz of Lancaster; brothers, William "Bub" Follmer and Kenneth Follmer, both of Maysville; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Patricia Ann Talbott, 44, of Texas, formerly of Covington, died Oct. 30. She was a homemaker.

Mable Jenkins Trapp, 68, of Cincinnati, died Sunday as a result of an automobile accident on Reading Road in Cincinnati. She was a member of Morgan Christian Church. Her husband, Bobby Trapp, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Robbie Trapp of Union and Greg Trapp of Morgan; daughters, Ava Ice of Falmouth and Lee Ann Robinson of Cincinnati; her mother, Jessie Irene Miller of Butler; a sister, Betty Kemp of Falmouth; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Grants Lick.

Earl Edward Tupman, 80, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at Woodspoint Health Care Center, Florence. He was a retired welder and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include a son, Clifford Tupman of Taylor Mill; three nephews and four nieces.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Ruth M. Turner, 69, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
A son, Ronnie Dale Turner, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Samuel Turner and Daniel Turner, both of Covington, James Turner of Latonia, and Elbert Jackie Turner of Eddiesville; daughters, Elberta Gross, Melissa Collins, and Kathy Ellis, all of Covington; 30 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Tina M. Vendler, 44, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a waitress at Skyline Chili.
Survivors include a brother, David R. Vendler of Covington; an uncle, Burley Ailstock of Newport; an aunt, Lula Beach of Florence; and numerous cousins.

Ted Williams, II, 50, of Erlanger, died Sunday at his residence.
He was a warranty technician for Fisher Homes and a member of the Pompilio's Golf Team.
Survivors include his wife, Dee Williams; a stepson, Joshua Hamilton of Erlanger; sisters, Terry Williams of Charlotte, N.C., and Donna Simmons of Berea; and one grandchild.
No services are scheduled. Memorial visitation will be 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Mr. Williams will be cremated.
Ronald L. Yauch, 65, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired conductor for CSX Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Yauch; sons, Steve Yauch of Union and Scott Yauck of Williamstown; daughters, Cheri Yauch of Florence, and Shelly Yauch and Julie Yauch, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepson, Ben Herrmann of Elsmere; a stepdaughter, Jackie Bell of Elsmere; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Yauch Family Home, 410 Main St., Elsmere. Mr. Yauch will be cremated. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling the arrangements.
