Ellis O'Neal, farmer, survived Pearl Harbor
Ellis B. O'Neal enlisted in the Marine Corps on Jan. 7, 1941, and exactly 11 months later found himself stationed at the EWA Marine Corps Air Station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The Carrollton resident never said too much about the Japanese surprise attack that he witnessed first-hand, said his wife, Julia Rivers Jackson O'Neal.
"He said they were in a lot of danger, " she said. "They were all running and trying to get out of the way of the planes."
Although he kept it to himself, the experience surely stayed with Mr. O'Neal, 85, who died Friday at his home.
He served for many years as state chairman of the Kentucky Bluegrass Chapter No. 1 of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, a group dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the attack.
Mr. O'Neal's military service didn't end with Pearl Harbor. He stayed in the Marines six years, then returned to Carroll County and bought a farm. He returned to service for about a year during the Korean War.
His military service over, Mr. O'Neal settled down to farm life. He raised corn and tobacco and milked cows.
He served on the county school board for 12 years, and chaired the board when his son, Walton J. O'Neal, was in high school.
"He was a strong devotee of the school system, " said his son, who lives in Raleigh, N.C. "He devoted a lot of energy to that."
"It was nice to have a father figure like that, someone you could kind of look up to, " he said. "The community around us looked up to him, too."
Mr. O'Neal was also a deacon at the Ghent Baptist Church and a lifelong member of the American Legion.
"He was always jolly and laughing, " said his wife, whom he married
in 1946.
"Mine was kind of the ideal father, you might say, " his son said.
