Robert Svec devoted to family and sports
Robert Svec's loyalty to family was lifelong but was revealed early in adulthood -- when he was drafted as an outfielder in the late-1950s by his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"He had just gotten married
then, so I'm not even sure he went, " one of his four sons, Chris Svec of Union, said Friday.
"But he loved sports. The Pirates, and obviously the Steelers."
Asked to summarize the life of a man who was a coin collector, youth sports coach, church volunteer and hospital vice president, Chris Svec didn't hesitate.
"Just a loving father, " he said.
Mr. Svec, of Crestview Hills, a longtime pharmacist who retired in the early-'90s as a vice president in the materials management department at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was 72.
Born on March 10, 1932 in Johnstown, Pa., Mr. Svec graduated from the Detroit Institute of Technology with a degree in pharmacy, then moved to Cumberland, Md., where he was a pharmacist for 27 years.
There he coached youth basketball and baseball, and also served as a trainer on football teams.
Many of the teams included his sons.
When a business recruiter called with an out-of-state job offer in 1977, he brought his wife and four sons to Northern Kentucky, where St. E's was just opening its south unit.
Mr. Svec spent 15 years there, eventually rising to vice president.
He went into medicine, his son recalled, "because he just liked helping people."
He loved going to Reds and Bengals games, and eventually came to root for the Cincinnati teams.
"But if they were playing the Bucs, forget it, " Chris Svec said. "Same with the Steelers."
