Harry Chamberlain, loved trains, woodworking
Harry B. Chamberlain loved the railroad and he loved to make things.
So perhaps it was only natural that when he retired after 42 years with the Southern Railway, he built a huge barbecue grill in the shape of a train engine.
The grill burned wood, and the smoke poured out the engine's smokestack. Behind the engine, Mr. Chamberlain built a miniature railroad car to keep refreshments in. When children who had never roasted a marshmallow came to his backyard parties, "they thought they were really something, " said Chamberlain's wife, Ann.
Mr. Chamberlain, 81, died Tuesday at his home in Ludlow.
He started his railroad career in Somerset, where he grew up and met his future wife. They wed in 1947, and were transferred to Ludlow in 1950, where Mr. Chamberlain did maintenance and repair work.
When they first moved to Ludlow, his wife felt homesick, so three times a week they took the train home to visit. "All the conductors knew us, " she said.
Mr. Chamberlain did great woodwork in his basement shop filled with saws and drills. He did some of the pulpit woodwork for the Ludlow Christian Church -- later, he would join the Bromley Christian Church -- and made dollhouse furniture for his grandchildren. "It's still down there, and it probably still will be, so I can see him standing there working, " his wife said of the shop.
Mr. Chamberlain served for four years in World War II as a machine gunner on a bomber. He was an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver Award recipient and a former Scoutmaster in Ludlow.
The neighbors depended on him when they needed to fix things, his wife said.
"He loved to do things that no one else did, " his wife said. "He could make it work, if it was workable."
