Edna Mae Aulick, 96, extraordinary teacher

Lifelong Northern Kentucky educator Edna Mae Coleman Aulick helped shape English education and students' lives in Falmouth, Pendleton County and elsewhere during her half-century as an English teacher.

"She loved helping people, " said her niece and former student, Brenda Sorrell, 62, of Independence. "There's an awful lot of lives she touched and made better."

Mrs. Aulick died Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. She was 96.

Born in 1908, she spent the majority of her life in the classroom. After graduating from Falmouth High School in 1926 and attending the University of Kentucky, she started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Pendleton County.

Sorrell said her mother, who was also a student of Mrs. Aulick's, would earn a nickel for running to the schoolhouse in the mornings to start a fire in the stove in the classroom.

"You knew your subject when you got out of her class, " said Sorrell.

Mrs. Aulick also taught elsewhere during her career, including Falmouth High School and schools in Hollywood, Fla., and Broward County, Fla.

She started the school newspapers and yearbooks at Falmouth and Pendleton County high schools. But those weren't the only legacies she left behind.

Sorrell remembers how her aunt helped several students get into college 40 years ago, at a time when she said college educations weren't common.

"She wanted to watch people grow and change, " said Sorrell.

In retirement, Mrs. Aulick continued to contribute to Northern Kentucky's educational systems as a member of the Pendleton County, Northern Kentucky and Kentucky retired teachers associations.

Her contributions extended beyond the realm of education. She also served as a past president of the Falmouth Women's Club and was a lifelong member of St. Xavier Church.

"She was very involved with church and her family life, " Sorrell said.

Mrs. Aulick's began her own family when she married her first husband, Paul Woodhead, who died in 1942.

She later married her second husband, Clarence Aulick, who died in 1961. Mr. and Mrs. Aulick enjoyed spending time at a winter home in Florida, where she would substitute teach.
