Kelly Earle Jr., always tried to lend a hand
Kelly Rugless Earle Jr. liked to help resolve problems.
From his involvement with numerous civic boards to his role in helping liberate Germany's Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945, the Berry native always tried to lend a hand.
"He was someone who always wanted things to work out for the best for everyone, " his daughter, Patricia Earle, of Lexington, said.
Mr. Earle, 87, died Sunday at Lexington County Place Nursing Facility.
The Berry, Harrison County man graduated from University of Kentucky in 1940, the only one of six children in his family to attend college. His daughter said he gave up the chance to play basketball there and worked three jobs to pay his tuition.
"He was definitely a hard worker and tried to achieve the very best for his family, " his daughter said.
Mr. Earle served in the Army in World War II with the 68th Medical Regiment. He served in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he went on to teach vocational agriculture for 32 years at Harrison County High School and co-own his family's farm.
His daughter said he enjoyed fishing and hunting quail, squirrel and rabbit. "All of which we ate, many times for breakfast, " she said.
He was a member of Berry United Methodist Church, charter member and former president of the Berry Lions Club, chairman of the board of directors for Union Bank of Berry and Farmers National Bank of Cynthiana, and chairman of the Harrison Memorial Hospital Board, Harrison County Senior Citizens, and Pythian Grove Cemetery.
Two wives, Anna Margaret Fisher Earle and Georgia Lee Renaker Earle, preceded him in death.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include a son, Dr. Gary Fisher Earle of Lexington; a stepson, Teddy Reid Renaker Jr., of Lexington; a stepdaughter, Nancy Gay Swainhart of Fort Thomas; a sister, Marjorie Pierce of Berry; and five step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Harold Albert Baumgartner, 85, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired farmer, optician, and mail carrier, and a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. A daughter, Janet Carol Baumgartner, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta Baumgartner; sons, David H. Baumgartner of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mark P. Baumgartner of Florence, and Charles J. Baumgartner of Dry Ridge; daughters, Dora M. Fry of Erlanger, Sandra L. Arnold and Pamela E. Ryan, both of Independence, and Deborah A. Oldiges of Florence; a brother, Albert L. Baumgartner of Walton; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
William O. Boyers Sr., 66, of Dayton, died Dec. 21 at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired maintenance worker with the Federal Reserve Bank, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his companion, Betty Carnes of Dayton; sons, William Boyers Jr., and Jimmy Boyers, both of Dayton; a daughter, Beverly Mayne of Cincinnati; and sisters, Catherine Quillen of Dayton and Lana Freeman of Florence.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Cremation will take place at Fares J. Radel Crematory, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Dreyton Angelo Byrge, 10 months, of Dayton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was the son of Jesse Byrge and Shonda Pierson of Dayton.
Other survivors include a brother, Jesse Byrge of Fort Thomas; paternal grandfather, Manuel Byrge of Dayton; and maternal grandparents, Leroy and Maggie Barhorst of Dayton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Carl Wayne Coy, 66, of Mount Olivet, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer and employee from Ladish Co.
Survivors include his wife, Lois L. Ellis Coy; a son, John W. Coy of Bracken County; a daughter, Veronica L. Polley of Maysville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Buck Cox, 71, of Butler, died Monday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler.

William P. Cropper, 89, of Maysville, formerly of Washington, died at Masonic Home, Louisville. He was a retired caretaker of St. Patrick cemetery and a City of Maysville electrical inspector.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Estill Cropper; sons, Leo Cropper and Andy Cropper; daughters, Margaret Campisano, Pat Cropper, Helen Prather, Karen Seales, and Barbara Brown; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Nettie Hughes, 90, of Owenton, died Monday at Owenton Manor. She was the former owner of the Jonesville Nursing Home, the Hughes Nursing Home in Owenton, and ran a home health care service in Thomas Trailer Park. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and Macedonia Baptist Church. Her husband, Raymond Hughes, and sons, John "Bill" Thomas Hughes and Danny Ray Hughes, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Debra Moore of Jonesville; six great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Rudeena "Deena" Gayle Morrison Keyes, 46, of Williamstown, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a finishing cutter at Libby's Gourmet Desserts.
Survivors include her husband, Ike Claude Keyes; sons, Eric Davis and Steven Davis, both of Williamstown; a daughter, Brandy Davis of Covington; a brother, Billy Morrison of Crittenden; a sister, Pamela Cain of Elsmere; and five grandchildren.

Charles "Charlie" Loyd, 88, of Latonia, died Sunday at Grant Manor, Williamstown. He was a retired driver from the Kentucky Livery Corp. and an Army veteran of World War II.

Kim B. Mattingly, 52, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at his residence. He was a radio broadcaster and a member of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association.

Charles A. Nafus, 92, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired sheet metal worker from Littleford Brothers and a member of Northside Community Church, Cincinnati.

Nathan Edward Northcutt, 79, of Florence, died Dec. 19 at Woodspoint Health Care Center, Florence. He was a self-employed bookkeeper and a Navy veteran.

Mary Barbara Lahni Pikar, 90, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was the owner of Pikar's, Newport. Her husband, Blase Joseph Pikar, preceded her in death.

Charles F. Rolfsen, 83, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired shipping manager from General Electric and an Army veteran of World War II. Helen Stout, 41, of Ludlow, died Dec. 17 at Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati.

Charles D. White, 67, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was the owner of Charlie's Barber Shop, Covington, and an Army veteran. His wife, Willa D. White, preceded him in death.
