Those who knew John David "Hacksaw" Creekmore, described him as a gentle giant, a quiet 275-pound man with broad shoulders and a love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
Mr. Creekmore, 40, died of a massive heart attack Dec. 17 at his home in Bellevue.
Mr. Creekmore's nickname has several sources, according to his family. His wife said it came about because his appearance bore a resemblance to wrestler "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. His mother said the nickname had its source in Creekmore's sleeping patterns -- namely his snoring.
What both his mother and wife agree on is that Creekmore's stature was rivaled in size only by his heart.
"His hugs were bone-crushing, " said his mother, Carol Creekmore Lynn, a former mayor of Dayton. "He was humble, quiet and never boastful."
She recounted the story of when Mr. Creekmore's brother, Bobby, died about 23 years ago, leaving a wife and two children. At age 17, Mr. Creekmore built himself a room in the basement of Bobby's house so he could help take care of his brother's family.
After attending Campbell County High School, where he at one time held a bench-press weight-lifting record, Mr. Creekmore graduated from Dayton High School.
He later worked as the superintendent of public works for the city of Dayton from 1988 to 1995. He then worked for Newport Steel until 2001, when he became a customer service representative for the Internal Revenue Service.
"The joke was, if the person calling him could have seen him, they would've been a lot nicer, " said Kelley Riddle Creekmore, his wife of seven years and a co-worker at the IRS. "He was a very loving man. He was intimidating to look at, but so sweet and loving."
They met at a bar when Mr. Creekmore bumped into his future wife while playing pool.
"He was a great pool shooter, " his wife said. "We ended up shooting against each other, and I came out on top."
Both had formerly been married
and had two children.
"We were like the mini Brady Bunch, " his wife said. "He took on my kids. The word 'step' was never in there."
She describes her husband as a "wanna-be biker." Although he didn't own a motorcycle, he wore a long beard and had a collection of Harley-Davidson models. He was also a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association.
His other interests included camping and watching sports.
