Gladys Coleman Poe, energetic, people-lover

During a life than nearly spanned a century, Gladys Coleman Poe was an energetic lady, businesswoman and faithful churchgoer who loved to be around people.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brooksville for 80 years and rarely missed a service.

Coleman died at her home Dec. 19 on Garrett Avenue in Brooksville. She was 99.

Mrs. Poe was a member of the Homemakers Twelfth Club, the Book Club and the Garden Club, and a former Sunday School teacher.

Into her late 90s, she remained healthy and made weekly visits to DJ's Beauty Salon and took frequent trips to local restaurants. Mrs. Poe lived in her home until her death, and a favored activity was sitting on her porch and talking with friends in the summer.

She was born in Robertson County and moved to Powersville when she was 6. She married Carroll Poe in 1925 and they ran a country rolling store, which traveled though Bracken County for years. The couple also owned and operated the Main Street Food Market in Brookeville through World War II. They sold that store before buying Canary Ridge Hone and Fruit Farm, which they ran until the early 1970s.

Survivors include a son, Ron Poe, of West Fairlee, Vt., four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert Poe; two sisters, Ilene McKibben and Blanche Insko; a brother, Johnson Coleman, and a grandson, Randy Poe.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Moore and Parker Funeral Homes in Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the First Baptist Church in Brooksville or Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Rd. Maysville, Ky., 41056.

Sister Mary deLellis, S.N.D., 86, formerly Thelma Marie Bergen, of Park Hills, died at 9:12 a.m. Tuesday at Lourdes Hall, Park Hills. She was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Park Hills.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Dunn of Lexington, and a brother, Frank Bergen of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sisters of Notre Dame Convent Chapel, Park Hills. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday, with a wake service at 5 p.m. Burial will be in the convent cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, Ky. 41011.

Alice Ann Hampton, 66, of Falmouth, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Southern Baptist Church and Pendleton County Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a son, Jerry G. Hampton of Florence; daughters, April Dawn Jenkins of Falmouth and Angie Marie Russo of Florence; brothers, Manley E. Smith Jr. of Butler and Otis Lee Smith of Somerset; sisters, Bernice Case and Linda Justice, both of Falmouth, Ruth Smith of Alabama, Betty Lou Mattingly and Clara Mae Smith, both of Butler; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Southern Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Oakwood Nursing Home, 2441 S. Highway 27, Somerset, Ky. 42501; or Pendleton County Senior Citizens, Silver St., Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Robert Paul Heidrich, 25, of Cincinnati, formerly of Taylor Mill, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Home of Cincinnati. He was an employee of Kidd Adult Center in Cincinnati and a member of St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill.

Survivors include his parents, Stephen A. and Mary Carol Reinhart Heidrich of Taylor Mill; a brother, Daniel Stephen Heidrich of Taylor Mill; a sister, Amanda Catherine Heidrich of Covington; and grandparents, Gilbert L. and Marge Heidrich of Erlanger, and Catherine Reinhart of Taylor Mill.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Home, 10722 Wyscarver Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45241. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Oakley Hewling, 76, of Florence, died at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired salesman with Swallens department stores, a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Goldsberry Hewling; a son, Douglas S. Hewling of Fort Wright; daughters, Sandra L. Kreyling of Villa Hills and Kimberly S. Struewing of Walton; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; or Mary Queen of Heaven Adopt-a-Student, 1150 Donaldson Road, Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Robert "Jake" Jacobs, 74, of Latonia Lakes, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired master electrician with Equitable Bag Co. in Covington and Interlake Steel in Newport, and a member of Iron Horsemen Club, Covington. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. His wife, Betty Lou Goldizen Jacobs; and a son, Joseph Jacobs; and a daughter, Sandra Brown, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Bobby Jacobs of Latonia Lakes; daughters, Peggy Geltig of Newport and Anna Mains of Ervin; a brother, Frank Jacobs of Independence; a sister, Judy Baldwin of Ryland Heights; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Eleanor Bruns Meyers, 60, of Lakeside Park, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Meyers; daughters, Roberta Wolfe and Nancy Bowman, both of Florence, Katie Meyers of Corinth and Connie Meyers of Lakeside Park; sons, Patrick Meyers of Lakeside Park and Ken Meyers of Erlanger; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Nancy Bruns Scholarship Fund, in care of Thomas More College, 333 Thomas More Parkway, Crestview Hills, Ky. 41017.

Ruth H. Moose, 87, of Butler, died at 3:45 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Heights Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Church, Alexandria.

She was a member of St. Mary Seniors. Her husband, Geral Moose, died in 2001.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Moose of Butler; a sister, Eileen Ebert of Southgate; brothers, Bill Grothaus of Milford, Ohio, Jack Grothaus of Fort Thomas and Tom Grothaus of Alexandria; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Church, 8246 E. Main St. Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Anna Mae Newkirk, 73, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a home health aide with the former Dr. Scholl's factory in Falmouth and a member of Short Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Her husband, Harold Newkirk, died July 5.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Shepperd of Falmouth; sons, Harold Michael Newkirk and Allen Wayne Newkirk, both of Falmouth; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newkirk Family Cemetery, Kincaid Lake State Park, Falmouth.

Heinz-Otto "Henry" Schroeder, 88, of Elsmere, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a tailor with Globe Hamilton Tailors in Cincinnati and a member of Elsmere Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Adelheid Schroeder; daughters, Ursula Smith of Florence and Arlene Reeves of Crestwood; a brother, Walter Schroeder of Elsmere; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101; Ronald McDonald House, 350 Erkenbrecher Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Jack Curtis Siler, 75, of Covington, died Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

He was a retired dock loader with Interstate Trucking Co., and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Siler; sons, Tom Siler of Burlington, Kevin Siler of Paducah and David Siler of Hebron; daughters, Jackie Howard of Cincinnati and Gina Siler of Covington; a brother, William Siler of Jellico, Tenn.; sisters, Opal Watson and Geraldine Ross, both of Trenton, Mich.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Sylvian A. Smith, 74, of Covington, died at 10:19 a.m. Monday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills campus, Cincinnati.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly DeZarn of Dry Ridge; a son, Ronald Smith of Covington; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. today at Mount Pisgah Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

John Campbell Thomas, 76, of Owenton, died Tuesday at Owenton Manor.

He was a farmer, a former owner of Thomas Hardware and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church.

He was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Kemper Thomas; sons, John Thomas Jr. of Owenton and Jack Thomas of Frankfort; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald & New Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Owenton First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 213 N. Main St., Owenton, Ky. 40359; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Frances J. Krantz Walke, 91, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired cashier and wrapper with Shillito's department store. Her husband, Edward William Walke, died in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Jo-Ann Zweifel of Fort Mitchell; a son, Norbert Walke of Cincinnati; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin of Tours Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Rebold, Rosenacker and Sexton Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Keyaisa Alexis Young, 6 months, the daughter of Shawnee Young and Ronald Burton of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Other survivors include sisters, Jasmine Powell, Anastasia Powell and Ronniece Burton, all of Covington, and Emma Burton of Erlanger; brothers, Ronald Burton Jr., Markel Powell and Damont Burton, all of Covington.

Services will be at 7 tonight at Jones, Simpson and Gee Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
