Phillip Rhea Rollins 'would do anything to help someone'
Phillip Rhea Rollins was a good Samaritan who spent the second to last day of his life making sure a little girl would have a Merry Christmas.
Mr. Rollins, a former principal at Conner Middle School in Hebron, died at his Florence home Thursday.
"He was an all-around good guy who loved people and would do anything to help someone, " said his wife Charla (Newberry) Rollins.
Mr. Rollins, 63, got a call from someone who needed help buying Christmas presents for an 11-year-old girl.
"The girl's mom was in the hospital and she couldn't get her anything, " his wife explained.
Mr. Rollins and his wife went out Wednesday night and scoured the aisles of local department stores getting gifts so the girl could have a good Christmas.
Mr. Rollins helped another family last Christmas and was known to let people help with odd jobs around his home to earn extra money. He was a deacon at the Florence Baptist Church and was active in the Hope Ministries at the church. He was also a member of the Campbell County Rotary.
Mr. Rollins was a teacher, assistant principal and principal with Boone County Schools for 22 years before he left to pursue a career with State Farm Life Insurance in Fort Thomas. He also was a two-time cancer survivor.
He was an accomplished carpenter who built furniture and added a porch to his home. He loved watching his sons participate in sports as they grew up and in recent years enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Other survivors include his sons, Tony Rhea Rollins and Charlie Phillip Rollins, both of Florence; daughters, Rachelle Schuerman of Antioch, Tenn., and Christa DeGroff of Independence; a brother, Ralph Rollins of Union; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Florence Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Carrie Bowen, 95, of Williamstown, died Thursday at Grant Manor Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Stewartsville Baptist Church, Williamstown. Her husband, English Bowen, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Wanda Ruber of Dry Ridge, Vivian Combs of Williamstown, and Gertrude Souder of Wilmington, Ohio; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mary Patricia Breslin, 76, of Maysville, died Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a former flight attendant with Capitol Airlines. She was a member of the Ohio River Valley Artists Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Mason County Historical Society.
Survivors include her husband, Francis J. Breslin; sons, Patrick Breslin of Maysville, Michael Breslin of Burlington, and John Breslin of Richmond; a daughter, Mary B. Doyle of West Chester, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Knox and Brothers Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville. James Martin Carman, 73, of Kensington, Calif., formerly of Fort Thomas, died Dec. 9. He was the director of the Graduate Program in Health Services Management and professor emeritus at University of California at Berkeley and an Army veteran. He was a trustee and vice chair of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, chairman of the Kensington Municipal Advisory Board, and a member of the Canterbury Foundation, Bay Alarm Company Board of Directors, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Board, and the Oregon California Trails Association.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Carman; a son, Paul Carman of Richmond, Calif.; daughters, Barbara Peschiera of Portland, Ore., and Kathryn Fulton of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Hazel Griffith Ellis, 83, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Truman H. Ellis, Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Bobby Downey of Bromley, Jimmy Downey of Taylor Mill, and Ike Ellis of Elsmere; a daughter, May Beach of Erlanger; a sister, Dorothy Martin of Alabama; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
Timothy Joseph Fitterer, 44, of Dayton, died Dec. 4 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a driver for UPS, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a daughter, Talesha Fitterer of Newport; brothers, Gary Fitterer of Taylor Mill and James Fitterer of Newport; and a sister, Cheryl Fitterer of Pendleton County.

John Edward Fry, 57, of Elsmere, died Friday at his residence. He was a crew chief in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include brothers, Robert Anthony Fry of Covington and Steven Joseph Fry of Fort Mitchell; and a sister, Eileen M. Fry of Fort Mitchell.

Vicky Jean Hamilton, 44, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was the owner and operator of Saturday's, Newport.

William Meyers, II, 55, of Ludlow, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He worked in the sales department at Target Marketing Co., Fort Wright, and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Ludlow Athletic Club and the Northern Kentucky Coaches League.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Meyers; sons, William Meyers, III, of Billings, Okla., Joseph Meyers of Covington, Edward Meyers of Cincinnati, and Tony Meyers of Ludlow; a daughter, Ann Rott of Covington; his mother, Bertie Meyers of Erlanger; brothers, Robert Meyers and Daniel Meyers, both of Erlanger; a sister, Patricia Scheyer-Walker of Florence; and three grandchildren.

Judith Gayle Peebles, 57, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday in a car accident on Highway 25 in Kentucky. She was a cashier for White Castle, Richwood.

Vernon Sparks, 65, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired security guard from Allied Security Co. and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. Sparks; sons, Jeff Sparks of Erlanger and Billy Ray Sparks of Jackson; daughters, Carol Ann Bryant of Jackson and Tonya Sparks of Erlanger; brothers, Ray Sparks of Visalia, Ralph Sparks of Independence, and Russell Sparks of Liberty; sisters, Nancy Fairchild of Jackson and Shirley Lickfelt of Walled Lake, Mich.; and one grandchild.

Robert George Zimmerman, 64, of Alexandria, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was active in the Air Force serving in Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and Kosovo.
