Dr. Sherman A. Glass, Maysville veterinarian
Dr. Sherman A. Glass was an award-winning veterinarian for 45 years in Maysville, where people appreciated his sense of humor as well as his expertise with animals.
"If I saw him walking down the street, I'd start smiling and get a grin on my face, " said Judge John McNeil of Maysville. "I knew that when we met, he would tell me a story, and I'd be laughing."
Dr. Glass, 88, of Maysville, died Saturday at his home.
He was honored as Veterinarian of the Year in 1976 by the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association and received the group's distinguished service award.
Dr. Glass, a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, was presented with the school's top alumni award in 1990.
He served two terms as president of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association and served 10 years on the group's executive board. He also was a member of the Kentucky State Board of Agriculture.
A native of Cleveland, Dr. Glass opened his practice in Maysville after Army service in World War II in the China-Burma-India theater.
"He was an extremely patriotic person. His patriotism was unsurpassed, " said his son, Dr. Michael Glass, who has followed in his father's footsteps as a veterinarian in Maysville.
"He had a tremendous love for animals that began when he had pets as a youngster. He had a great love for his family, and his family always came first.
"Everybody who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor. He could find humor in just about everything."
Because Dr. Glass often treated animals on farms, he would chat with farmers about Indian arrowheads and other Indian artifacts found on farmlands, and he got interested in such artifacts. He became an expert on Indian artifacts, assembled a collection and wrote extensively about them.
