Esther Jetter, helped elderly ladies in need
Esther Marie Granneman Jetter was a woman of many talents, but her greatest gift may have been compassion.
The 87-year-old Erlanger woman died Monday at the home of her daughter Sheryl Silcox, also of Erlanger.
Mrs. Jetter and her husband, the late Harold Jetter Sr. offered affordable rental units to elderly ladies through Jetter Real Estate, which they owned.
"My mom got the grocery lists from the ladies and would do their shopping for them and she always made sure their trash was taken out, " said Harold Jetter Jr., of Richwood, Ky. "She never charged them very much for rent because she didn't think they could afford it. She was the kindest lady I ever met."
Mrs. Jetter would also frequently pick up elderly ladies from bus stops and give them a ride. "Even if she didn't know them, she would pick them up, especially if the weather was bad, " said Silcox. "Dad told her one day she was going to pick up the wrong person, but she said they needed the help and just kept on doing it."
Mrs. Jetter played the harmonica and was also an author with a children's story, "Earl the Clumsy Squirrel, " published in Humpty Dumpty magazine. She wrote a poem in 1974, focusing on her views about life and death that will be recited at the funeral service.
Silcox said she and her mother also refinished furniture in their garage and sold it at the Livery Stable Antique Mall in Lawrenceburg, Ind. "We never made much money, but we had a great time together, " said Silcox.
