C.A. McConnell, plant superintendent
Charles Alderson McConnell grew up in a corner of the world where a good living is hard to make.
Mr. McConnell, 84, of Covington, who died Tuesday, grew up in Kenova, W.Va., a tiny town where West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio come together, where residents don't like to admit they live in Appalachia.
As a young man, he volunteered for service in the Navy during World War II. One day while on leave he met Rita Phillips, whose cousin grew up next door to him. They would have 58 years of married
life together.
But they found no jobs in their hometown that paid better than one in Cincinnati with Littleford Brothers Inc., a road-equipment company that would later move to Florence. Mr. McConnell worked more than 42 years with the company, rising to the post of plant superintendent before he retired in 1982.
The McConnells initially lived on East 21st Street in Covington and were active in the Immanuel Baptist Church. About 35 years ago, they moved to a smaller house off Highland Avenue and attended First Presbyterian Church.
When he wasn't working, Mr. McConnell enjoyed a few rounds of golf. He was also active in the Golden Rule Lodge No. 345 F&AM; in Latonia. After he retired, however, a series of health problems, including three strokes, kept him homebound until his death at the St. Elizabeth's Hospital North Hospice Unit.
"We had a good, happy life until here recently, " his wife said.
