Paul Estenfelder, 78, firefighter, WWII veteran

Paul M. Estenfelder didn't want to retire from the Covington Fire Department. Working as a firefighter was his life, said his widow, Virginia Lee Estenfelder.

But he didn't have a choice. He just couldn't drag hoses, drive the truck and carry people after he broke his back, she said.

Mr. Estenfelder, 78, of Park Hills, who died Monday at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati, served 15 years on the fire department. He retired in 1969 at the rank of lieutenant.

For a while, he and another firefighter owned and operated a bakery at 19th and Garrard streets in Covington. It was just down the street from where his future wife lived.

They met when she came in to make a purchase. A friend gave him her phone number -- they would have 40 years of married life together.

Mr. Estenfelder broke his back when he was climbing the stairs of a burning house to rescue a child and the stairway collapsed under him. Doctors eventually had to remove a bone and replace it with plastic, his wife said.

After he retired, Mr. Estenfelder, who was a Marine sergeant during World War II, took a job working at the Fifth Third Bank in downtown Cincinnati, helping customers with their safety deposit boxes.

When he wasn't working, he enjoyed placing bets at Turfway Park in Florence. "Even when he couldn't drive, he still got one of us to take him to the track to get his bets in, " his wife said.
