Edwin Massing, 97, salesman, top golfer
Edwin Lee Massing built a reputation as a salesman and a top-notch golfer who couldn't be ruffled. His calm demeanor earned him the nickname "Easy Ed."
Mr. Massing, 97, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Health Care Center & Rehabilitation.
He worked for Magic Chef Stove Co. and Eureka Williams vacuum cleaner maker in the Cincinnati area for 43 years.
Mr. Massing was born on April 23, 1907, in Erie, Pa. He worked for Magic Chef in Pittsburgh until the plant was converted into an airplane-parts factory in World War II.
When the war ended, Mr. Massing was transferred to work in Greater Cincinnati, and he settled in Fort Thomas.
Mr. Massing was an avid golfer who translated his passion for the game into a club championship in 1954 at the Highland Country Club in Fort Thomas. He was chairman of the Northern Kentucky Golfers League.
"He was an old-fashioned true gentleman. Golf was his passion. The last time he played he was probably at age 89, " said his daughter, Charlene Anne Massing, of Lawrenceburg, Ind.
Mr. Massing was vice president of the Cincinnati Lions Club, president of the Greensburg, Pa., Toastmasters and the Cincinnati Losantiville Toastmasters Club.
He took an interest in the Toastmasters clubs to hone his skills as a sales representative after being pulled away from school at an early age, his daughter Charlene said.
Mr. Massing was 12 when his father died, and he never completed high school. But he worked hard to educate himself, his daughter said. "He felt that would help him in his job to have a presence with people, " Ms. Massing said.
The family took many vacations to Mr. Massing's hometown of Erie and to various spots along Lake Erie in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
"For two girls, he was probably a pretty proper dad. I'll miss him. He was just a nice man, " his daughter said.
Mr. Massing was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Massing.
In addition to Ms. Massing, survivors include: daughter Lee Catherine McCullough, of Jackson, Tenn., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral and internment arrangements are private. Memorials may be sent to a hospice or charity of the donor's choice.
John C. Drake, 82, of Wilder, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospice, Fort Thomas. He was a retired attorney and a claims manager from Ohio Casualty Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II. A stepdaughter, Pamela Oditt, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine M. Schalk Drake; daughters, Deborah Whittaker of Council Grove, Kan., and Cheryl Coughlin of Cincinnati; a stepson, Stephen Downey of Highland Heights; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Presson of Lebanon, Ohio; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Merrill E. Gamarsh, 64, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Lakeside Place Health Care Center, Highland Heights. He was a disabled mailer machine operator with Motheral Printing in Texas, and a member of Heritage Fellowship Church, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Gamarsh; a son, Jeffrey Gamarsh of Richmond, Texas; a daughter, Laura Ashburn of Erlanger; a brother, Fredrick Gamarsh of Gardner, Mass.; sisters, Rose Ann Ricker and Barbara Ricker, both of Clinton, Mass., and Victoria Smith of Spring Hill, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Fellowship Church, Florence. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Place Health Care Center, 3510 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076. Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling the arrangements.
John E. "Jack" Hayes, 83, of Oakland, Fla., formerly of Latonia, died Thursday. He was a Navy veteran and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 949 F&AM;, Florence.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Beth Hayes-Brauner of Oakland, Fla.; sisters, Betty Smith and JoAnn Clair, both of San Diego, Calif.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Winter Garden, Fla. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, Fla. Elizabeth Hug, 86, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker, a sales representative with Avon Products, and a past state commander for the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include sons, Denny Hug of Alexandria, Bill Hug of Newport, Bobby Hug of Highland Heights, and Donald Hug of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home Chapel, Fort Thomas. There is no visitation. Ms. Hug will be cremated. Mary S. Hughes, 51, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a housekeeper with Holiday Inn, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Hughes.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. C&C; Mortuary Service, Covington, is handling the arrangements.
Fannie J. Mister, 82, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Breathers Club. Her husband, Frank Mister, and two sons, Frank Mister Jr. and John Mister, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Leroy Mister and Benjamin Mister, both of Newport, and James Mister of Madisonville; daughters, Elizabeth Jenkins of Washington, D.C., Naomi Mister of Newport, Zella Baugh of Elsmere, and Marcia Mister of Newport; 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Gary Alan Reinert, 60, of Ludlow, died Friday at his residence. He worked in the meat and seafood department at Winn-Dixie, Boynton Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his father, William H. Reinert of Delray Beach, Fla.; a brother, William R. Reinert of Bryson City, N.C.; and a sister, Barbara De Launey of Ludlow.

Clifford E. Ryan, 81, of Walton, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington. He was the former owner of Walton Hardware and Dry Goods, Walton, a manager of Mac's Liquor, Walton, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Walton Christian Church and Johnson-McElroy American Legion Post, Walton.
Survivors include sons, Rick Ryan of Dry Ridge and Randy Ryan of Milan, Ind.; stepdaughters, Debbie DeLuca of Vero Beach, Fla., and Tomi Meade of Walton; brothers, Earl LaVerne Ryan of Taylor Mill, Walt Ryan of Verona, and Robert Ryan of Peoria, Ill.; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Mary Charlotte Dodson Sledd, 92, of Maysville, died Sunday at her residence. She was a retired employee from the Maysville Extended Care Facility and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Sardis Homemakers.
Survivors include sons, John Sledd, Charles Sledd, and Phillip Sledd, all of Maysville; daughters, Sandra Slater of Williamsburg, Va., Janice Hoerr of Cincinnati, Mary Lynn Farney of Crestview Hills, and Susan Mayberry of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Nancye Pumpelly of Franklin, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Roberta Stewart, 80, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at Lakeside Park Care Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired nurse's aid.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Stewart of Atlanta, Ga., Richard Stewart of Cincinnati, and James Stewart of Georgia; daughters, Rose Kravitz of Florida and Joann Stewart of Dayton; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edna Marie Wiefering Walters, 59, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a teller with the Cinfed Credit Union, Covington, and a member of St. Therese Church, Southgate. Her father, Walter Wiefering, died in 2002.
Survivors include sons, Steven Walters of Salt Lake City, Utah, Anthony Walters and Rocky Walters, both of Bellevue; daughters, Kathi Walters Robbins of Fort Mitchell, Gerilynn Walters Harris of Crescent Springs and Maria Walters of Bellevue; her mother, Marie Ciani Wiefering of Southgate; a brother, Bill Wiefering Jr. of Southgate; sisters, Maria Stiene of Erlanger and Terry Stutler of Bracken County; and four grandchildren.
