Mary Stoddard, loving grandma
When her great-granddaughters visited her in Fort Mitchell, Mary Margaret Stoddard often played a game with them.
She made fake mail and stuck it in the mail slot beside her door, the one that opened into the house. The children, squealing with delight, would pick it up and take it outside to her, so she could do it again.
Mrs. Stoddard, who died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, said her son, Steve Stoddard of Sparta.
Her family was important to her throughout her 86 years.
When her husband, Romayne Stoddard, died in 1964, she didn't remarry but raised her two children on her own.
She worked as a secretary at the former LaSalette Academy in Covington for many years.
When the children grew up, she occupied herself with volunteer work, including visiting the sick at St. Elizabeth's and being a volunteer tour guide at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.
She worked twice a week for Be Concerned, a Covington food pantry and thrift shop, until she crushed her ankle in an auto accident in the late 1990s.
She was a stubborn woman, but very loving, who had lots of friends, said her daughter-in-law, Madeline Stoddard.
Technological advances left her behind.
"Microwave ovens and electric can openers scared the daylights out of her, " Steve Stoddard said.
