Nathaniel Seiter, all-time leading scorer at Brossart
Nathaniel David Seiter was energetic and enthusiastic, an outstanding athlete happy to be wherever he was.
To his younger teammates at Bishop Brossart High School, he was a hero.
A 1998 graduate of Brossart, he was the school's all-time leading scorer in boys' basketball, dating back to the school's origins as St. Mary's High School in 1950. During his four-year varsity career, Mr. Seiter racked up 1, 779 points, a record that still stands.
At 5:51 a.m. Tuesday, Campbell County police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Washington Trace Road in a rural part of the county. Mr. Seiter's 2002 Toyota Camry was southbound on Washington Trace when he lost control and struck a tree, police said.
Mr. Seiter, of California, who was driving alone and not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be a contributing factor. He was 24.
An employee of DHL Worldwide Express, he came from one of Campbell County's best known families, a family that first settled in the eastern part of the county two centuries ago. His father, David Seiter, said his family was a major component of his life.
"He loved being with family, " his father said. "He brought us all so much joy."
Bob Rowe was Mr. Seiter's assistant basketball coach during his junior and senior years.
"He was an idol to all the younger kids, " Mr. Rowe said.
"He wanted the ball at crunch time, and he was willing to make the big play to win the game. He's the one person who put Brossart basketball on the map."
The coach recalled one home game Mr. Seiter's senior year against Covington Catholic.
"Nathan hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to win the game. It was the first time we'd ever beaten CovCath. The crowd stormed the court and tackled him. It was just a mob scene. You have to understand that Nathan was just one of those kids that got everyone excited.
"He was the fans' favorite."
In addition to being an avid hunter and a member of the Kincaid Bassmasters of Falmouth, Mr. Seiter's father described him as "street wise."
"He played ball for Northern Kentucky University and decided after a year and a half that he didn't like it, " he explained. "He got plenty of playing time, but it was too much like a job. He had other things he wanted to do.
"So he quit the team, and he quit school. I told him that was fine, but he'd have to out-work everybody else to keep up. He got a job at DHL, a good job. But he was told if he wanted to go anywhere with the company, he'd have to get that degree.
"And he did. This would have been his second year back at Northern."
Mr. Seiter was working a third-shift job at DHL, taking business classes at Northern. He was killed on his way home from work.
He was a half-mile from his parents' home in California.
He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Church of California.
