LeRoy Hoffman, an honest policeman

LeRoy Henry Hoffman was an honest cop, back in a time when that wasn't so common.
His daughter Carol Lee Damron, of Burnside, said her father was a member of the Newport Police Department from 1942 to 1970.

He also was a member of the Committee of 500, which battled organized crime in Newport and eventually broke its grip on the city.

"He was very quiet and very honest, to a fault sometimes, " she said.

Mr. Hoffman died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Damron said her father was so honest that when he was once pulled over for speeding, he didn't use his status as a retired police captain to get out of the ticket.

"He's been a Sunday school teacher, and he lived what he taught, " she said.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of the York Street Congregational Church for 15 years, where he also was a deacon.

He also worked for Newport as city coordinator, housing inspector and housing commissioner.

And he helped plan the James Taylor Park on the riverfront.

The book, "Newport, Kentucky: A Bicentennial History, " was dedicated to Mr. Hoffman.

It said: "Combat infantryman in the second World War. Honest policeman in a time of compromised values. Inspired preserver of his community's heritage."

Damron said that summed up her father.

In addition to his dedication to the city, Mr. Hoffman was a strong family man.

Damron said he used to use his artistic talent to make board games for the family and took the family on trips to Europe.

And, when his grandchildren went off to college, he and his wife started a newsletter to keep them informed about events in the family and city. "It had some news and some baloney, " she said.

Each kid would get a $5 bill along with the newsletter.

Mr. Hoffman was an Army infantry veteran of Word War II and was a German interpreter. He was a member of the Lawler Hanlon VFW Post and Disabled American Veterans.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Wilma; another daughter, Shirley Ann Turner, of Newport; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services are being held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
