Josephine Wadleigh, active in community

During her 86 years of life, Josephine Kummer Wadleigh would marry two men -- decades apart -- who both served in the 72nd Field Artillery Regiment during World War II.

Mrs. Wadleigh, of Crestview Hills, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She met her first husband, Calvin Kummer, in 1942, when he was on leave from the Army, having just fought in Guadalcanal.

They were married, and after the war, settled in Northern Kentucky, where Kummer had found a job.

Together they raised three sons, Mrs. Kummer staying home with the children but putting her college degree in music to work at the Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, where she played the piano for services.

She would remain a member for 50 years, and she found the time to join other organizations too. She became a member of the Covington Art Club and a member of the boards of directors of the Covington Ladies Home and the Covington Children's Home.

She was also a member of the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary and the Fort Mitchell Country Club.

She attended reunions of her husband's old Army outfit, and there got to know Eric Wadleigh, who had trained with her husband and fought with him in the Pacific.

Kummer died in 1979. Years later, Mr. Wadleigh and his wife of 45 years divorced.

Mr. Wadleigh said his ex-wife asked him if he would remarry, and he said he thought he would like to. She suggested he try Mrs. Kummer.

He did, and they were married in 1993.

The care she took in her appearance attracted him to her in the beginning, he said.

"She was always so particular about her clothing, " he said. "Very pretty and sweet. Very attractive all the way around."
