James J. Hellmann, pilot, Korea veteran

James Joseph Hellmann turned his childhood love of flying into a decades long career as a pilot.

"He said when he worked that they wouldn't have to pay him, he loved it so much, " his sister Jean Teipel, of Fort Wright, said.

Mr. Hellman was a pilot with Pan Am Air Lines in Miami, Fla.

He flew for nearly 30 years before retiring, his sister said.

Mr. Hellmann, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South.

He was 77 years old.

Before becoming a commercial pilot Mr. Hellman was a paratrooper during the Korean War.

"He was 18. He was going to be drafted, and they said if he joined he could chose the field he wanted. He picked the paratroopers because he wanted something to do with an airplane, " Mrs. Teipel said.

Mrs. Teipel said her brother's love of flying went back to his childhood.

"For birthday presents, we used to go to Lunken Airport and he got to go up in a Piper Cub. He built airplanes and hung them and tried to tell you what they were, " she said.

In addition to flying, Mr. Hellman also liked the sea.

"He had a boat in Florida and would spend time on the water, " his sister said.

Mr. Hellman moved back to Northern Kentucky from Florida about eight years ago, Mrs. Teipel said.

Mr. Hellman was a member of Mother of God Church in Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle Morrison Hellman; three sons, Luke and Frank Hellman, both of Miami, and Robert Hellman, of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, Louis Edward Hellman, of Latonia; and three other sisters Betty Bohman, Edgewood, Mary Margaret Scheitz, of Erlanger, and Phyllis Herbst, of Delhi, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at Mother of God Church in Covington.

Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel in Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to Mother of God Church, 119 W. Sixth St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Stella T. Braun Anderson, 95, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Therese Church in Southgate.

She was a member of the church's Altar Society and Legion and Mary.

Her husband, John Anderson, died in 1989.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to St. Therese Church Building Fund, 11 Temple Place, Southgate, Ky. 41071; Living Monuments of Reparation, in care of Moments of Reparation Radio Program, P.O. William A. Benge, 87, of Kenton County, died Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

He was a retired machinist with Cincinnati Milacron.

His wife, Mildred Benge, died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Johnson of Cynthiana; a son, W. Dennis Benge of Covington; a brother, Robert Benge of Pennsylvania; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Memorials are suggested to William Gains Johnson Cardiac Care Unit Fund, in care of University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center Development, A301 Kentucky Clinic, Lexington, Ky. 40536.

Alonzo Clark Berry, 68, of Germantown, died Monday at his home. He was a school bus driver.

His wife, Mary Jane Holland Berry, died in 2002.

A son, Alonzo Berry Jr., died in 1984.

Survivors include daughters, France Sue Martin of Arkansas, Leslie Insko of Germantown and Opal Lawson of Indiana; a brother, Tyrone Berry of Germantown; a sister, Marie Lucas of Stanford; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

Edith Rushia Centers, of Union, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

She was a member of Taylorsport Community Church.

Her husband, Ray Centers, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Vera Joy Bradley of Union, Hazel King and Wilma McCowan, both of New Carlisle; sons, Gilbert Lester Centers of Nicholasville, Owen Ray Centers of Erlanger and Robert Allen Centers of Florence; a brother, John Reed of Lexington; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

William L. Gastright, 78, of Perry Park, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Alma Stephen Griffith, 80, of Corinth, died at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at McDaniel Funeral Home, Corinth.

William Frank Lebus Jr., 90, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.

He was a former vice consul to the American embassy in Belize, British Honduras and Norway, and worked with the American Foreign Service in Aruba, Spain, England, Germany and Paraguay.

He was a former trustee, elder and deacon of Cynthiana Presbyterian Church and a member of the Harrison County Education Foundation, the Cynthiana Inquisitors Club and the board of Bellewood Children's Home and Lees College.

The Harrison County Chamber of Commerce named him its Citizen of the Year in 1982.

Survivors include a cousin, Katherine Wilson of Cynthiana.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cynthiana Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Memorials are suggested to Cynthiana Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 456, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Catherine Menefee, 61, of Morning View, died Sunday at her home.

She was a disabled baker with Kroger Foods and a member of Piner Baptist Church.

She was a past president of the Piner Elementary PTA, a former member of the Piner Volunteer Fire Department and was active with Acteens.

Survivors include her husband, William Menefee; daughters, Mary Dayton of Maryville, Tenn., Peggy Dickerson of Worthville and Melissa Stone of Cincinnati; a sister, Virginia Brinker of Bellevue; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Martha Haynes Rassenfoss, 90, of Paris, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.

She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Paris, a former member of the Homemakers Club and former chairwoman of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary.

She was a past president of the Northern Kentucky chapter of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary. Daughters, Margaret Westwood and Kathryn Gregory, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, George A. Rassenfoss Jr.; daughters, Betty Pat Koenig of Erlanger, Judy Anne Rassenfoss Bishop of Bourbon County, Bridget Wolff of Boone County and Marphy Covington of Paris; sons, John Rassenfoss of Florence, George M. Rassenfoss, Mike Rassenfoss, Timothy Rassenfoss and Dennis E. Rassenfoss, all of Bourbon County; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Annunciation.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home, Paris.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to Church of the Annunciation Building Fund, 1007 Main St., Paris, Ky. 40361.

Pearl B. Steele, of Murray, died Friday at Henry County Medical Center, Paris, Tenn. She was a clerk. Her husband, James O. Steele, died in 1979.

Survivors include sons, Boyd Steele of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Bill Steele of Arlington, Va., Jimmie Steele of Dover and Alfred Steele of Springville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Jack A. Terrell, 83, of Hebron, died at 10:09 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a retired autoworker with General Motors and an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Evelyn Payne Terrell, died in 2003.

Survivors include a daughter, Sondra Middleton of Florence; sons, Arnold Terrell of Villa Hills, Donald Terrell of Florence, Jerry Terrell and Ron Terrell, both of Hebron, and Terry Terrell of Erlanger; a brother, Raymond Terrell of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Josie Mackey and Ochell Jackson, both of Permon; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

John W. Webster, 92, of Southgate, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a state trooper with the Indiana Highway Patrol, and a member of Dunkirk, Ind. American Legion Post No. 227, Dunkirk Elks Lodge No. 1776 and Dunkirk Masonic Lodge No. 275 F&AM.;

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Jeff Webster of Fort Thomas, Jay Webster of San Antonio and John Webster of Martinsville, Ind.; a daughter, Jackie Ryden of Hollywood, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Dunkirk, Ind.

A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Eva Wood, 74, of Covington, died at 6:49 p.m. Sunday at her home.

She was a homemaker.

A daughter, Kathy Wood, died in 2002.

Survivors include her husband, William Wood Sr.; a son, William Wood Jr. of Covington; daughters, Linda Kitts and Cindy Doane, both of Independence, Vicki Gillespie and Ann Wells, both of Covington, Sheila Moore of Pueblo, Colo., and Julia Hachney of Ludlow; a brother, Dempsey Baird of Newport; a sister, Ruth Decker of Plant City, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Katelynn Rae Young, 13 months, the daughter of Tracy and Wayne Young of Burlington, died Monday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.

Other survivors include a brother, Austin Young, at home; a sister, Mackenzie Young, at home; and grandparents, Ann and Dave Parker of Foster.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hebron Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.

Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Katelynn Rae Young Fund, in care of any Fifth Third Bank.
