Bill Caffie, noted jazz and blues singer, performed with Count Basie
Bill Caffie, a legendary Cincinnati jazz and blues singer who went from performing in West End clubs to Carnegie Hall with Count Basie, died Saturday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness related to liver disease. The West End resident was 74.
Fellow musicians are remembering Mr. Caffie for his deep velvet voice, as a master of vocal phrasing and storytelling who could make any song his own.
Click on photo for larger image "He was the total package -- the consummate performer, a great singer, a gentleman who cared about people, and a darn good dresser, too" said Steve Schmidt, a keyboard player who played frequently with Mr. Caffie.
Wilber Longmire, a Cincinnati jazz and R&B; legend in his own right, said his fellow musicians loved Mr. Caffie.
"He crossed the cultural line. His life is a testimony to all of us coming together as a musical community. He made friends wherever he went, " said Longmire, who helped produce Mr. Caffie's shows and recordings for 25 years. Mr. Caffie's last CD, "Leaving This Ol' Town, " released in 2002, featured the singer at his finest -- scat singing, doing blues, R&B; or just working out a standard. He was an elegant vocalist.
"My style is just to sing what I feel, " Mr. Caffie told The Post in a 2002 interview. "I guess I am kind of a moody singer."
Longmire said Mr. Caffie was not as wealthy or as famous as Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis Jr. or other singers of their ilk, "but he was just as effective in what he was doing for those of us who worked with him. When we recorded and played he felt just as serious about what we were doing. He wanted to make sure his stuff was tight." I
Mr. Caffie is survived by a brother, Robert Robinson of Cincinnati.
A private funeral is planned. Local musicians are hoping to combine a memorial service with a jam session by early next week, but details are pending.
Hubert F. Feldmann, served in World War II
His children learned early that if they had to wake up Hubert F. "Bert" Feldmann, they did so from a distance.
Mr. Feldmann would wake up flailing his arms, a reflex from his years of combat during World War II, said his son, Greg Feldmann of Edgewood.
He never talked much about his Army service, but his children knew that he drove a half-track in France and Belgium. They also knew that it left quite an impression on his sleeping habits.

He grew up on 12th Street in Covington, and attended St. James High School in Ludlow before his military service. After the war, he worked as a mechanic, then as a driver for the French Bauer dairy in Cincinnati, then as a truck driver for the Diem & Wing Paper Company.
After he married
his wife, Rita, in 1949, they bought a home on 12th Street across from where Mr. Feldman's mother lived. As their children grew, they were always around their grandmother.
Mr. Feldmann was very involved in St. John's parish in Covington, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He also served on the board of trustees for a savings and loan program that the parish ran.
When he wasn't working, he enjoyed tinkering with cars.
Very outgoing, he loved to joke with and kid people, his son said. "He made chores seem like fun, " he said.
