Jane Winston Jennings, never had idle moment
Jane Winston Jennings was the epitome of industriousness.
She was a book buyer for a department store, a seamstress for a dance studio, a bookkeeper for a gas station, a PTA president, a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a scrapbook maker for friends.
"She never stopped, " said Mrs. Jennings' daughter, Sandra Jackson of Union. "She was always busy. She was never idle.
"I never knew what color my room would be painted when I came home from school."
Mrs. Jennings, 88, of Covington, died Friday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia.
She was an assistant book buyer for J.H. Shillito Co. of Cincinnati and had many first-edition books signed by authors.
Mrs. Jennings was a seamstress for Ziegler Studio of Dance for many years. She was a bookkeeper at a Gulf gas station in Covington operated by her late husband, John R. Jennings.
She was president of the Fifth District School PTA in Covington and a room mother for the school. She held numerous offices in Eastern Star'sRosebud Chapter 39 during her 50 years of membership.
Mrs. Jennings compiled more than 30 scrapbooks for friends and relatives.
At age 70, after her husband died, she took driving lessons from friends and became a proficient senior citizen driver.
All this was accomplished by a woman who suffered rheumatoid arthritis most of her life as a result of scarlet fever when she was a child.
"She was intelligent, meticulous, loving, caring and funny, " said her daughter. "I've had so many people tell me, 'I just loved your mother.'"
Mrs. Jennings not only did a lot of things, she was conscientious about doing the jobs right.
"She paid attention to the details, " said her daughter. "For example, the scrapbooks she made for other people were so carefully compiled.
"People were amazed by what she was able to do."
Other survivors include a son, Gordon Jennings of Trappe, Md., a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home in Taylor Mill, where Eastern Star services will be conducted at 7:45 p.m.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Janet Mae Hyland Baker, 74, of Tamarac, Fla., formerly of Erlanger, died Friday at her home. She was a retired personal banker and a former member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Her husband, Ralph Baker, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne Haggerty of Palm Beach, Fla.; sons, Edward G. Baker of Lake Worth, Fla., and James Burns of Florence; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Norma Kay O'Connor Brock, 60, of Gallatin County, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a former employee of Dorman Products of America, Warsaw.
Survivors include sons, James Art Brock, David Allen Brock and Randall Lee Brock, all of Warsaw; brothers, Charles O'Connor, Larry O'Connor and Gary O'Connor, all of Warsaw; sisters, Linda O'Connor, Brenda Howard, Lois Groves and Mary Roberts, all of Warsaw; and five grandchildren.

Mary "Mae" Catherine Brueckner, 57, of Independence, died Thursday in an auto accident in Marietta, Ga. She was a computer specialist with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Brueckner; sons, Tim Hoskins and Doug Hoskins, both of California; stepdaughters, Jill Bright of Independence and Kim Johnson of Florence; a stepson, Joe Brueckner of Independence; her mother, Edna Gunkel Wagner of Camp Springs; a sister, Judy Taylor of Butler; brothers, Stanley Wagner of Camp Springs, Larry Wagner of Silver Grove, Jerry Wagner of Brooksville and Steve Wagner of Gardnersville; three grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.

Jack Wayne Chowning, 52, of Carrollton, died Friday in a farm accident in Carroll County. He was a retired employee of Dow Corning Chemical Co., Carrollton, and a member of Owenton Christian Church. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Carrollton, the county emergency hazardous material response team and was a youth softball coach.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Ann Kindoll Chowning; a daughter, Joanna Beth Chowning of Carrollton; sons, Jared Wayne Chowning of Louisville and Jeffrey Everett Chowning of Campbellsburg; and brothers, Marshall Scott Chowning and David "Muffett" Chowning, both of Carrollton.

Lewis E. Clifton, 79, of Owenton, died Friday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, Lexington. He was the owner of local Ashland Oil and Shell service stations, a deacon and Sunday school teacher with Cedar Hill Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Johnson Clifton; a son, Lewis J. Clifton of Louisville; a brother, Vernon Clifton of Owenton; and two grandchildren.

Thomas L. Crisler, 76, of Owenton, died at 3:20 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired photo engraver with Vivi Color, a member of First United Methodist Church in Covington and Col. Clay Masonic Lodge No. 159 in Covington, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldene Crisler; a son, Richard Crisler of Fort Wright; a daughter, Trent Blume of Elsmere; a sister, Ruth Sommer of Placerville, Calif.; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Mary C. Gayron, 87, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at her home. She was an employee of Chase Manhattan Co. in New York. Her husband, Edward J. Gayron, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Elizabeth Gayron Brian of Jamestown, R.I., and Virginia Gayron Hamlin of Fort Wright; a sister, Gertrude E. Clark of Fort Wright; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Linda Hill, 57, of Florence, died at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a customer service representative with the Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include a daughter, Tina Campbell of Florence; a brother, Tim Hill of West Chester, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Charles W. "Hayseed" Jett, 67, of Flemingsburg, formerly of Mays Lick, died Friday at Fleming County Hospital, Flemingsburg. He was a retired farmer and a Marine Corps veteran. A son, William D. Jett, died in 1987.
Survivors include sons, John Jett of Mays Lick, Charles L. Jett of Radcliff, Robert W. Jett of Brooksville and Timothy T. Jett of Owingsville; daughters, Kathy Malone and Bonnie Jett, both of Flemingsburg; his mother, Margaret Curtis Jett of New Castle, Ind.; brothers, William Jett, Ronnie Jett and Ricky Jett, all of Indianapolis, and Glenn Jett of Franklin, Ind.; sisters, Bonnie McCarthy of Sulphur Springs, Ind., Linda Applegate of Vanceburg and Betty Linville of Mount Olivet; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary "Tootie" Marcum, 83, of Ludlow, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Community of Faith Presbyterian Church. She was founder of Ludlow Senior Citizens and the Ludlow PTA, and a former Cincinnati Enquirer Woman of the Year. Her husband, Hershel Marcum, died in 1984.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Baxter of Fort Mitchell; a son, Kent Marcum of Fort Wright; brothers, Jack Kleier of Edgewood and Harold Kleier of Ludlow; sisters, Edith Kelly of Beaufort, S.C., Ruth Ann Williams of Independence and Charlene Ravenscraft of Temperance, Mich.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruby Pearl Martin, 64, of Owenton, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a member of Hessler Assembly of God.
Survivors include her husband, Otis Martin; a son, Otis Martin Jr. of Lexington; daughters, Angela Ann Perkins and Tamera Martin, both of Owenton; sisters, Nancy Edwards and Kathy Runyon, both of Virginia, and Stella Barton of Missouri; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James Oscar Moses, 68, of Highland Heights, died Saturday at his home. He was a forklift operator with BDP International, Hebron.

Burrill J. Mullins, 57, of Warsaw, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was disabled.

Ardella O'Neill, 88, of Augusta, died Saturday at her daughter's home in Cincinnati. Her husband, Bob O'Neill, preceded her in death.

Joseph Charles Roberts, 1 day, the son of Robert Charles and Cristal G. Roberts of Covington, died at 10:37 a.m. Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

Kathleen R. "Kay" Schaffeld, 70, of Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a factory worker with BAWAC, Florence, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A son, Joe Schaffeld, died in 2000.

William Raymond Spaulding, 55, of Newport, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a self-employed cabinetmaker.

Pearl Beatrice Stephens, 77, of Falmouth, died Saturday at her home. She was a caregiver with North Key Care Center, Falmouth. Her husband, Hulon Stephens, died in 1987.
Survivors include daughters, Janet Hyden of Somerset, Shirley Johnson and Tina Stephens, both of Crittenden, and Linda Fardo of Alexandria; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Irene Sydnor, 72, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was co-owner of Crittenden Auto Sales and a member of Mount Olivet Church of Christ, Williamstown.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Gene Sydnor; a son, Jeff Sydnor of Crittenden; daughters, Jeannie Sydnor and Pam Sydnor, both of Crittenden; sisters, Wanda Dill of Covington and Alene Hager of Florence; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Whaley Sr., 85, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a truck driver with Dance Freight and Consolidated Freightlines, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ora Whaley; a son, Charles Whaley Jr. of Hebron; a sister, Jessie Deaton of Florence; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
