Millie Brownfield, flamboyant, born organizer
You couldn't miss Millie "NaNa" Edmonds Brownfield when she walked into a room.
"People noticed Mom, " said her daughter, Dinah Belle Brownfield of Lakeside Park.
"She was a June Cleaver kind of mom, always well-dressed and careful about her appearance. She had outfits to kill -- she might buy a pair of earrings, then buy an outfit to match.
"Red was her favorite color. She had walls of red in her closet. And she favored jewelry that was, well, splashy. And when she was older, her hair turned platinum blonde. Add it all together, and she had quite a striking impact."
Mrs. Brownfield, of Fort Wright, died early Thursday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. She was 82.
Mrs. Brownfield's flamboyant style fit in well with her late husband's position as director of the band at WLWT-TV (Channel 5). Bruce O. Brownsfield Sr. is perhaps best remembered as the band director for Paul Dixon's show on Channel 5. He also worked with "Midwestern Hayride, " which aired on both on WLW-AM (700) and WLWT.
"Mom organized all the promotional trips, when the show would travel to county fairs and state fairs in places like Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis and Lexington, " Mrs. Martin said.
"She was always the one planning where the band would go for dinner, making sure the roses were waiting for this person or that. She was right there, making sure Dad had his music and his tie matched his handkerchief."
The Brownfields were married
60 years, until his death 11 months ago, Mrs. Martin said.
Mrs. Brownfield was a born organizer. At one point, Mrs. Martin recalls that she was president of the PTA at all three schools where she had a child enrolled -- Dixie Heights High, Turkeyfoot Middle School and Park Hills Elementary.
"Nothing was more important to her than her family and her grandchildren, and nobody could have been more devoted, " Mrs. Martin said.
Other survivors include; two sons, Bruce O. Brownfield Jr. of Fort Wright and Steve A. Brownfield of Crescent Springs; two brothers, Earl W. Edmonds of Loveland and Victor Earl Edmonds of Columbus, and seven grandchildren.
