Antoinette Schmitz, 'she knew everybody'
Antoinette "Toni" Schmitz was so well known in Fort Thomas that so-called quick trips to the store always turned into marathon conversations with friends.
"She would say, 'I'm just going to run in here a minute, ' and I knew she wouldn't be out for at least 45 minutes, " said Mrs. Schmitz's daughter, Barbara Schwabe of Fort Thomas. "She knew everybody."
Mrs. Schmitz, 87, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
She was the owner-operator of Annette's Beauty Shop in Fort Thomas, which she started in her home in the 1950s. She continued cutting hair up until age 82, when she retired.
Mrs. Schmitz was past president of the Fort Thomas Businessman's Association and the Committee for Fort Thomas.
She was the organizer and first chairperson of the Fort Thomas Fourth of July Parade.
Mrs. Schmitz did volunteer work at nursing homes and was a member of St. Thomas Church.
"She was vivacious, " said her daughter. "She had a flair. She decorated for every holiday. She decorated herself for every holiday. She was Italian."
Mrs. Schmitz enjoyed socializing.
"She just loved people, " said her daughter. "She knew every clerk at every store. She loved the community of Fort Thomas. She took candy to the police officers."
About the only thing Mrs. Schmitz didn't like was admitting her age.
"She didn't want people to know how old she was, " said her daughter. "She didn't want to be judged by her age."
Her husband, Harry W. Schmitz Jr., died in 1991.
Other survivors include two sons, John Paul Schmitz of Edgewood and Harry W. Schmitz III of Wilder, and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Fort Thomas.
Burial will be at St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas.

James Richard Beck Sr., 75, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired employee of the Campbell County Road Department. Wives, Joyce Beck (1985) and Emma Beck (2002), both preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, James Beck Jr. of Stanford; a daughter, Janice Gork of Grand Rapids, Mich.; stepsons, Charles Hogle and Donald Hogle, both of Melbourne; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011.
Mary Ballard Clark, 68, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Knoxville Christian Church. Her husband, Donald Gene Clark, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Jerry Clark of Paris, Darrell Clark of Williamstown, Donnie Clark of Crittenden and Greg Clark of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Mary Ann Knipfer of Williamstown; sisters, Garnett Rice of Crittenden, Opal Lipscomb of Independence, Mandy Shepperd of Gardnersville and Ruby Clark of Latonia Lakes; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Broadridge Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Margaret M. Fox, 88, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a labor relations secretary.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Fox and Stephen Fox; a daughter, Mary Patricia Kofron; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Guardian Angels Church, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Guardian Angels Cemetery, Cincinnati. Barbara R. Hartig, 63, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at her home. She was a bookkeeper. Her husband, Richard Hartig, died in 2001.
Survivors include sons, Don Hartig of Highland Heights, Robert Hartig of Newport and William Hartig of Southgate; daughters, Melissa Stone and Tiffany Hartig, both of Highland Heights; brothers, Bernard Heidelberg of Alexandria and Kenneth Heidelberg of New Jersey; and six grandchildren.

Marie C. Johnson, 84, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Her husband, Grover Johnson, died in 1987.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce McAdams of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Carol Kasselman of Cincinnati and Lisa Hales of Highland Heights; sisters, Ruth Cowens of Cold Spring and Mary Ann Droege of Covington; a brother, Donald Atwood of Bellevue; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Col. Tony Sarge Minnick, 52, of Owenton, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas. He was a sales representative with Convergys, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 128 FandAM, Owenton.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Arrowood Minnick; a son, Patrick S. Minnick of Greenwood, Ind.; daughters, Bonnie R. Minnick and Christina D. Mildred L. Reed, 73, of Florence, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Elsmere Baptist Church. Her husband, Huegene Reed Sr., died in 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky Renaker of Norwood, Ohio; sons, Bill Reed of Florence, Jeff Reed of Amelia, Ohio, and Huegene Reed Jr. of Croton, Ohio; a sister, Doris Smith of Eastgate, Ohio; a brother, William Ball of Texas; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Neal Clayton Russell, 47, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at his home. He worked at North Key Community Care in Falmouth, was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church and an honorary member of the Falmouth Fire Department.

Ollie Taylor, 84, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore. He was a retired employee of Ladish Co. and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Esta Sturgill Taylor, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Ollie L. Taylor of Harrison County; daughters, Charlotte Northcutt, Connie Mullen, Brenda Hollar and Freda Grubbs, all of Harrison County; a sister, Leah Tabor of Sandy Hook; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy A. Turner, 82, of Florence, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington. She was a member of the church Joy Club. Her husband,, Harvey H. Turner, died in 1998.
