Jane Sargeant, devoted teacher, mother, day-care pioneer

Jane Sargeant took a tragedy early in her life and turned it into an opportunity that benefited others for decades.

Mrs. Sargeant, 85, died Wednesday at her residence in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Mount Washington.

She was living in New York and expecting her first child when she was widowed at a very young age. At a time when fewer women worked outside the home, Mrs. Sargeant not only held a job, but also went to school and began raising a young daughter.

The Roselle Park, N.J., native attended the prestigious Backstreet College of Education in New York until she remarried and moved to Cincinnati, where she graduated from the University of Cincinnati.

She was a teacher at the United Cerebral Palsy Center of Cincinnati for several years, before getting involved in licensing day-care centers for the State of Ohio.

"She thought it was very important for people to feel that their children were safe in day care centers, " explained her daughter, Ann Patterson-Luce. "She was one of several people who traveled to day care centers across Ohio making sure things were done right."

Mrs. Sargeant and her colleagues were pioneers in ensuring that day care centers had proper nutrition and adequate and qualified personnel.

"If people weren't doing things right, they hated to see her coming, " said Patterson-Luce.

Later, Mrs. Sargeant filled a similar position with the City of Cincinnati. During that time, she was also an anonymous donor to needy children throughout Cincinnati, according to her daughter.

"She explained to us that it's the way you do things, you take care of others, " said Patterson-Luce. "To her it was just a way of life."

Mrs. Sargeant's career in education spanned 40 years and included stints with the Cincinnati Association for the Education of Young Children, The Cincinnati Montessori, Society, the Community Action Commission, Comprehensive Community Child Care.

She was involved in the Women's City Club and was Head Nursery Teacher at the Lotspeich School.
