E. Owen Keeler, a certified public accountant for more than 50 years

E. Owen Keeler had "an accounting side and a quirky side, " said his business associate and friend, Martin Horwitz.

On the accounting side, he was a certified public account for more than 50 years, most of that time with Rankin, Rankin & Co. CPAs in Fort Wright, representing a multitude of companies.

"He helped them grow through the transition from the old Northern Kentucky to the new Northern Kentucky, " said Horwitz, a Crescent Springs tax attorney. "He was a pioneer in the business community."

On the "quirky" side, said Horwitz, Mr. Keeler -- who died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence at age 84 -- pursued a variety of wide-ranging interests.

He played clarinet for the Northern Kentucky Symphony prior to World War II. He loved model trains and reading.

He was an avid vegetable gardener and fruit grower at his Florence home who exhibited his produce -- corn, green beans, bell peppers and pears -- annually at the Boone County Fair.

Mr. Keeler's penchant for helping people manifested itself in both his professional and personal life.

"He befriended many people, " said Horwitz. "He said it was not how much you made in life, it was how much you spent."

A native of Indianapolis and a graduate of Newport High School, Mr. Keeler served for 21 months as an air transportation technician sergeant with the Army in Italy and Sicily during World War II.

It was in Italy during the war that he met his wife, Esther, a teletype operator in the Women's Army Corps.
