Eugene C. von Riestenberg, started Oktoberfest gala
Eugene C. von Riestenberg's legacy is on full view during a glorious weekend each September in downtown Cincinnati when a half-million people gather for the city's biggest event.
Mr. von Riestenberg laid claim to having come up with the idea for Oktoberfest Zinzinnati.
"He started it from scratch, " said Mr. von Riestenberg's wife, Clarine. "He thought it up, promoted it and figured it would be huge. Oktoberfest is his baby."
Mr. von Riestenberg, 79, of Florence, died Monday of a heart attack at his home.
He was extremely proud of his German heritage and started Oktoberfest in 1976 when he was president of the German American Citizens League as a tribute to the German-Americans who helped settle Cincinnati.
"With Oktoberfest, he made a significant contribution to the community and gave German-Americans their rightful place in the public arena, " said William J. Miller Jr. of Mount Lookout, Mr. von Riestenberg's longtime friend.
"He said, 'German-Americans have a rich heritage, so let's be proud of it.'"
Mr. von Riestenberg enjoyed attending Oktoberfest in his tractanzug, a traditional German gray gabardine suit with stag horn buttons and green felt lapels.
He loved to talk about German accomplishments, and could recite a litany of them in short order, as evidenced by this excerpt from a 1998 interview with Post columnist David Wecker, when he began with Nedersaxons, the original Germans who conquered what is now Eng-land:
"Where do you think the Anglo-Saxons came from? The language we're speaking is German. Who were the leaders in music, in science, in the art of warfare? You think that's not an art? The Germans, that's who. A magnificent stock and we're its descendants.
"Go back to 9 A.D. The Romans were undefeated until the Germans conquered them, brought down three Roman legions in two days. That was the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire. Up until then, wherever the Romans went, people put up their hands and surrendered.
"The Germans fought with short swords, and they were naked. Why naked? Intimidation. You're a Roman soldier in your armor in the cold of North Germany, and you're looking at a hillside filled with naked Germans. That's going to make you think twice."
Mr. von Riestenberg grew up in Cincinnati's Mount Auburn neighborhood and attended St. Xavier High School. He was a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland.
He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the South Pacific.
Mr. von Riestenberg was a police officer in Birmingham, Ala., during the 1960s and later was a part-time Hamilton County deputy sheriff.
He was a safety consultant to numerous companies, scouting factories and identifying places where workers could be hurt, making recommendations to improve safety and conducting training sessions on workplace safety.
"He had a brilliant mind and was interested in many things, " said Clarine von Riestenberg. "He had keen insight."
Mr. von Riestenberg was a prolific letter writer to newspapers.
"When he heard of injustices, he wanted something done about them, " said his wife. "He had a lot of opinions, and he had the brains to back them up."
Mr. Miller said Mr. von Riestenberg was an imposing figure.
"He was tall and trim and his presence was felt, " he said. "He was forthright. He was respectful, but uncompromising with the truth."
Although Mr. von Riestenberg lived in other cities during various times of his life, he always considered Cincinnati his home, his wife said.
"He was a Cincinnati boy, " she said, "and he really believed in Cincinnati."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
