Mary Covey, 107, liked to baby-sit

Mary E. Meadows Covey's youngest surviving son has great-great-grandchildren.

If she were alive today, she could pose for a picture of six generations of her family.

Mrs. Covey died Thursday at her home at the Woodcrest Manor Care Center in Elsmere. If she had lived until June 4, she would have been 108 years old.

That's only 148 more days, a mere blink of the eye to someone who's lived for 39, 298 of them.

Mrs. Covey grew up in Powell County, Ky., where she met her husband, Russell, who was working on a road crew crushing rocks and such.

He quit that job and took his bride to Portsmouth, Ohio, where he worked in a steel mill. The family later moved to Mount Sterling, Ky., and to the northern Kentucky area, where he farmed for a living.

When her husband died in an accident in 1937, Mrs. Covey moved to the Independence area and worked for Gibson Greeting Card in Cincinnati's Roselawn neighborhood.

When her own children started having children, Mrs. Covey spent her time baby-sitting for them and their children, which she loved to do. She lived with her granddaughter in Florence and then in Burlington.

"Taking care of kids was about all she ever worried about, " said her son, Russell Covey of Latonia.

Mrs. Covey also loved to "sit around and talk about the Lord" with people, her son said. She attended several different churches over the course of her long life, including Calvary Baptist in Latonia and Orchard Street Baptist in Elsmere.

Her son credits her insistence that he attend church with helping him straighten out his own life.

"I didn't follow it (her advice) for a lot of years, " he said. "I guess I was the black sheep of the family."

In the last decade of her life -- her 11th decade -- arthritis kept her in a lot of pain.

"She kept wanting the Lord to take her home, and he finally did, " her son, 84, said. "It's a blessing, she doesn't have to suffer anymore now."

Mrs. Covey was an honorary deputy judge executive of Campbell County.

Other survivors include daughters, Dorothy Maupin of Burlington and Irene Horton of Elsmere; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Lighthouse Freewill Baptist Church, 401 Main St., Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Allen Conrad, loved to grow tomatoes

When he was a boy, Russ Conrad would eat meals made from the vegetable garden that his father, Allen W. Conrad, grew in his Falmouth backyard.

During the summer, he said, the family would eat entire meals of vegetables.

The elder Conrad, who died Thursday at 94, loved to garden, and according to his son, grew the best tomatoes in the community.

At harvest time, he would fill a 5-gallon bucket with tomatoes and leave them on a neighbor's porch. It would return to him empty the next day, and he would leave it on another neighbor's porch.

Mr. Conrad also loved to grow flowers, especially roses. "One thing dad always told me was that weeds are easy when they're little, but they're hard when they get big. That's the way his garden was, it was spotless clean, " his son said.

He tended his garden until he was 88. He fathered his last child -- Jill A. Hall of Williamsburg, Ohio -- when he was 50 and his wife 48.

Mr. Conrad learned gardening early in his life when he farmed for a living. Then he bought a hardware store in Falmouth, which he grew into a hardware, furniture and gift store.

"Dad felt lucky to be able to do business with friends, " his son said. "In a small town, you have that opportunity."

His son now runs Conrad Hardware Inc., the same store his father started 52 years ago, which now has a Radio Shack franchise as well.

Mr. Conrad was a very active member of the Short Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and held many other offices. He also served as moderator for the Union Baptist Association.

For the last four or five years of his life, he couldn't attend church, a fact that didn't set well with him. He still read his Bible, however, and listened to preachers on television.

Mr. Conrad was a past president of the Kentucky Retail Hardware Association and Pendleton County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Falmouth City Council.

Other survivors include his wife, Mary Conrad; son Jerry K. Conrad of Plymouth, Fla.; daughters, Pamela Beck of Georgetown, Ohio, and Jill A. Hall of Williamsburg, Ohio; a brother, Louis M.
