Bernard Kathman, Big Ten football ref
After the first football games that Bernard Joseph "Bernie" Kathman officiated, he got paid by passing a hat.
He had the officiating bug, however, and he kept at it, first in high school football games, then college football.
Mr. Kathman, 77, who died Thursday at his home in Edgewood, worked as a referee for more than 30 years.
"He loved the rules, he loved the people we went with, he especially loved the high school kids and the college kids, " said his wife, Zelda Warren Kathman.
Mr. Kathman worked in the Mid-American Conference, and then spent his last 10 or so years working in the Big Ten Conference. He usually served as a back judge or field judge, and occasionally as the referee.
His wife traveled with him, and saw football games in all the Big Ten schools except for the University of Iowa.
"He used to tell me, 'You can't get there from here, '" she said.
He quit in 1977, a year before the death of their second son, Stephen R. Kathman.
Mr. Kathman's main job was owning and operating Kathman Goodyear Shoe Repair in Cincinnati, a business his father started in the 1920s. The original shop was at 111 W. Fifth St., but the elder Kathman sold it to the city of Cincinnati to make room for Saks Fifth Avenue, Mrs. Kathman said.
Her husband started working there when he returned from serving in the Navy during World War II. He would work there for 55 years, until his retirement in 2000, when the business was at 108 W. Sixth St.
