Edward 'Bud' Witte, jack-of-all-trades
Edward "Bud" Witte was the person people called on when they needed some work done.
The Melbourne resident, who died Wednesday at 82, was a jack-of-all-trades who family and friends could always depend on whenever they needed help, said his daughter-in-law, Claudia Henderson of Camp Springs.
He built several houses in the Camp Springs area, moving into the next one when he finished it, and took pride in pointing them out when he drove down Stonehouse Road, she said.
Mr. Witte was a retired carpenter in the University of Cincinnati's maintenance department. He was one of the charter members of the Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department, but had not been active since his heart attack three years ago.
He grew up in Silver Grove and graduated from Silver Grove High School. He often talked of working as a youth in the small grocery store his parents owned in nearby Brent.
Mr. Witte served in the Army during World War II. He still talked about how awful seasickness was, and retained a lifelong aversion to chicken and potatoes, the staples of Army life.
He also talked about the natives and culture of Saipan, the Pacific island where he was stationed. His interest in other cultures was fueled by National Geographic, which he read faithfully.
He didn't have much time for hobbies, but enjoyed growing a vegetable garden and fishing at Cave Run Lake.
Personality-wise, he was a typical German, his daughter-in-law said -- never met a stranger, always had an opinion about something, liked beer.
"His philosophy of life was to always do a good job, and hard work pays off, " she said.
