Mildred Abernathy, caring and generous

Mildred K. Abernathy had one son, but she was a mother to many children.

No child in Mrs. Abernathy's Covington neighborhood went to school hungry if she could help it.

"Whenever there was a kid in the neighborhood from a family that wasn't doing well, my grandmother always found a way to make sure they had clothes, had a hot meal in the morning in grade school, " said Randy Abernathy, a grandson in Folsom, Calif. "That's what she did. She took care of people."

Mrs. Abernathy, 80, died last Wednesday at her home.

She lived her whole life in Covington, raising a son, Ralph Abernathy, of Anderson Township, and a grandson, Randy Abernathy.

Though she had an eighth-grade education, she was determined to give her son and grandson the opportunity to receive a fuller education, Randy Abernathy said.

She got busy raising funds for Glenn O. Swing Elementary School and Holmes High School to make sure her boys got the best education possible. Her generous spirit kept her working for other children, too.

"She continued to work for the (Holmes) PTA and helped push to get the baccalaureate program at Holmes. For 10 or 12 years after I got out of high school, she was still heavily involved in the PTA, " Randy Abernathy said.

For all her work, she was nominated for and received a Kentucky Colonel award.

Mrs. Abernathy worked at Carrs Brothers' restaurant in the 1940s and '50s during rowdy days in Covington, her grandson said.

After marrying Carroll Abernathy, who died in 1996, she became a housewife and stay-at-home mother.

"She was just an inspiration. She never had anything bad to say about anybody. You got caught up in her enthusiasm. She touched so many lives and had such a positive impact on so many people, " Randy Abernathy said.
