Burton G. Cox, 79, dedicated to family
Burton Gerald Cox was dedicated to his family, church, community and country -- in that order.
His son, Paul Cox, of Chillicothe, Ohio, said he had his priorities straight and was committed to serving all four.
"He was dedicated, " he said. "He was a family man."
Mr. Cox, 79, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown, Pa.
His family always came first, from carefully planning family vacations every year to driving to Chillicothe to attend grandkids' kindergarten graduations and sporting events.
One year, when Paul Cox was young, he said his father planned a long trip to 35 states that included a stop in the mountains so they could throw snowballs in July.
"He always liked to plan those trips out, " he said.
He would travel to Chillicothe, about three hours east of Cincinnati, to support his grandchildren's important milestones.
His church came next, having served as deacon of First Baptist Church in Ludlow, former leader of the Royal Ambassadors at First Baptist and elder at Faith Bible Fellowship Church in Harleysville, Pa.
Serving his community and country also were priorities, Mr. Cox said.
He was a volunteer with the Awana Club in Harleysville and the Ludlow Boys Club.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was deeply humble and patriotic, his son said. Mr. Cox would proudly salute the flag at parades and was involved with the Destroyer Escort Association of WWII, his son said.
"It was always a heartfelt emotion that came forward, " he said.
Mr. Cox also was a supervisor with Dayton Freight Co
