Kenneth D. Cooper, loved to play croquet
On a Sunday afternoon when the sun was shining, one could always find Kenneth D. Cooper on someone's lawn, playing a serious game of croquet.
"He would rather do that than eat, " said his widow, Anna E. Cooper.
Mr. Cooper, 71, of Independence, who died Monday, learned the game at the feet of his father, when he was growing up in rural Kenton County.
He regularly shot his ball through all the wickets and back to the starting stake before anyone else could take a turn, his wife said.
Mr. Cooper graduated from Simon Kenton High School, and remained an avid fan of the basketball team after graduation. He also closely followed University of Kentucky basketball.
After high school, he studied at Georgetown College to become a Baptist minister. While preaching in Stanford, in Lincoln County, he met the church pianist, who would marry him on Christmas Day, 1955.
She expected to become a minister's wife, but Mr. Cooper changed his plans. He enlisted in the Army and served as a nurse for four years, primarily in Germany.
While he was in the Army, they visited nine European countries, and saw the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels.
When they returned home, Mr. Cooper became an assembler at the R.A. Jones Co., first in Covington and then in Crescent Springs. He retired in 1992, after 34 years of service.
Although he never became a minister, Mr. Cooper remained a Baptist. He was most recently a member of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church.
