Gilbert Johanneman, cared about others
Joan Johanneman likes to tell a story that shows what a considerate man her husband was.
The last job Gilbert Joseph Johanneman Sr., held was with the Boone Adult Work Activities Center in Florence, which helps people with disabilities find work. The center formerly held a contract to clean rest stops along local interstate highways.
While working at a rest stop, Mr. Johanneman found two rings, on two separate occasions. Using clues from the rings themselves, and with help from his wife, he searched the Internet to find their owners.
He found one owner before the owner even knew the ring was missing, she said.
"He was one who always treated others as he wanted to be treated in return, " said his daughter, Christina Thomas of Alexandria.
Mr. Johanneman, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 77.
His daughter told another story about her father's kindness, this one about the time he saw a young woman shoveling snow from her driveway.
He stopped his truck, got out and shoveled the entire driveway with her, she said, in spite of his 76 years. He wouldn't take any money.
Raised in Highland Heights, Mr. Johanneman held a variety of jobs during his life. He retired several times, always returning to the workforce.
He was a planning and zoning administrator for Campbell County, and manager of the former Pike 27 Drive-in movie theater in Cold Spring. He was a HUD administrator for Campbell County.
In his spare time, he liked hunting, fishing and automobiles.
He survived rectal cancer, and lived with a permanent colostomy for 30 years.
He was always there for his children, his daughter said.
"He always wanted everyone to get along, " she said. "And with eight children, that was always a hardship."
