Leon House, helped form fire department

Years before recruiters started pitching the idea, Leon "Lee" House learned a trade in the military.

The Taylor Mill resident, who died Sunday at 81, worked as a refrigeration mechanic on the USS Saidor, an aircraft carrier, that plied the ocean around New Guinea in World War II.

Discharged after the war, he returned to Kentucky, but was sent back to the Navy during the Korean War, when he worked on the repair ship USS Tidewater and did mechanical work on submarines.

When he returned to Northern Kentucky in 1954, he did mechanical engineering in the refrigeration business. He retired from Bachman Refrigeration Co. in Cincinnati in 1988 after 20 years of service.

During the 1960s, he helped start the Taylor Mill Volunteer Fire Department and the Taylor Mill Swim Club. During the 1970s, he served on City Council.

A very civic-minded person, he was a past master of the Latonia Lodge No. 746 and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He was a former deacon of the Latonia Church of Christ, now known as the Hilltop Church of Christ. "He was very committed to his faith, " said his daughter, Pam Fisk of Union.

Mr. House was an avid Reds fan who took his daughter to the team's training camp in Florida every season when she was growing up. He held Reds season tickets for many years.

He was an avid bowler, and then an avid golfer later in life.

Other survivors include his wife, Virgiline "Virg" House; a brother, Joe Florence of Walton; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by American Legion services. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; or the American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Jesse Wayne Abney, 60, of Berea, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include sons, Jesse Abney and John Abney; daughters, Donna Abney, Connie Abney, Twila Abney and Jerica Abney; brothers, John Adams and Bennett Adams, both of Mount Vernon; sisters, Stella Brown of Covington, Louise Shirley of Florence and Marcella Speer of Deland, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Willena Toncray Kinsler Boggs, 92, of Maysville, died at 8:40 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a teacher with Mason County Schools and St. Patrick School in Maysville, and was a member of St. Patrick Church, Mason County Homemakers, the Maysville Garden club and Mason County Senior Citizens. Her first husband, John James Kinsler, and second husband, Maurice Boggs, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Jim Kinsler of Findlay, Ohio, John Boggs and Bill Boggs, both of Maysville; sisters, Nell Wilson, Marge Burke of Maysville and Mary Elliott of Fredericksburg, Ind.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Church, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville, with prayers at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick School, 318 Limestone, Maysville, Ky. 41056; Mason County Senior Citizens, 1679 Forest Ave., Maysville, Ky. 41056; Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056; or Mason County Ovarian Cancer Fund.

Rebecca Bowman, 66, of Newport, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon Bowman; sons, Michael Bowman, Mark Bowman, Jimmy Bowman and Donald Lee Bowman, all of Newport; a daughter, Mary Jo Bowman of Newport; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Anne A. Chadwick, 75, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a nurse at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

Survivors include sons, Sandy Creekmore, David Devere Creekmore and Stuart Anthony Creekmore, all of Independence; brothers, sisters and a grandson.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn cemetery Chapel, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Roy Donald Chapman, 81, of Walton, died Monday at his daughter's home in Walton. He was a former employee of the Ford Motor Co., and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His wife, Patricia Hicks Chapman, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Phillip Napier of Warsaw, Bobby Chapman and Jeff Chapman, both of North Carolina; daughters, Teri Bradley of Walton and Tammy Miller of North Carolina; a sister, Josie Johns of Warsaw; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the World War II Veterans Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, Va. 22201; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Mildred Ilene Shelton Clinebell, 86, of Latonia, died at 5:15 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a retired dental technician.

Her husbands, Leonard Hinson and Leo Clinebell, and a son, William Clinebell, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Ken Clinebell of Fort Wright; brothers, Winston Shelton of Russell and Buck Shelton of Baltimore; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Joseph H. Engelman, 78, of Independence, died Friday at his home.

He was a tool and die maker with Kratz-Wilde, and a member of the Bishop's Choir at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington and the old Catholic Theater Guild. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Engelman; daughters, Julie Kish of New Orleans and Amy Engelman Hinds of Rabbit Hash; sons, John Engelman of Falmouth, Joseph P. Engelman of Big Bone, Andrew Engelman of Jellico, Tenn., Bernard Engelman of Monterey, William Engelman of Dry Ridge, Tony Engelman of Santa Fe, N.M., and Matthew Engelman of Independence; and a brother, Walter Engelman of Highland Heights.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral Schwab Organ Fund, 9 E. 12th St., Covington, Ky. 41011; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Freida Ann Irwin Gabbard, 54, of Covington, died Sunday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Leeroy Gabbard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Cassandra Gabbard of Owenton and Freida Luke of Lebanon, Tenn.; sons, Leroy Gabbard, Christopher Lee Gabbard and William Edward Gabbard, all of Covington; sisters, Cora Whaley and Beatrice Hamlin, both of Covington; brothers, Fred Ray Irwin of Erlanger and Ray Irwin Jr. of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at TLC Cremation and Funeral Service, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Irene Gangloff, of Covington, died Tuesday at her home.

Jack J. Heupel, 79, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.

Brianna Hope Faith Hirth-Gross, 35 days, of Covington, died at 10:13 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Survivors include her mother, Laurene Hirth of Covington; sisters, Priscilla Noble of Jackson, Latasha N. Hirth of Walton and Kentra Neil of Newport; and brothers, Glenn McPherron of Newport and David Neil of Pennsylvania.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army, 340 W. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Brenda Faye Kemper, 63, of Owenton, died Monday at University Medical Center, Lexington.

She was a retired Kentucky Revenue Cabinet worker and a member of Monterey Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold "Tommy" Kemper; a son, Darrell Kemper of Shelby County; daughters, Marcella Wright of Monterey, Lucinda Janes of Salvisa and Felechia Wainscott of New Liberty; her mother, Lou Alma Jones Gaines of Monterey; a sister, Louise Taylor of Owenton; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Relay for Life, in care of American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Thomas Jay Lewis, 77, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired general contractor. A son, Danny Lewis, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Houser; daughters, Missy Houser of Erlanger, Vicki Flanigan of Independence and Mickey Hoffman of Bellevue; sons, Tommy Lewis and Larry Lewis, both of Cincinnati and Ricky Lewis of Covington; stepdaughters, Linda Orme, Debbie Mobley and Pamela Houser, all of Grant County; stepsons, Jim Houser of Grant County, Mike Houser of Erlanger and Johnny Asher of Barbourville; 28 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Community Foundation, St. Luke Hospital, 85 N. Grand Ave., Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or the charity of the donor's choice. Radel Funeral Homes are handling arrangements.

Charlotte Marksberry, 83, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker, caregiver and a retired seamstress. Her husband, James Kenneth Marksberry, died Jan. 10.

Survivors include nieces, Mary Ann Scheper of Edgewood and Barbara Rabe of Independence; and a nephew, Mark Simpson of Marietta, Ga.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn cemetery Chapel, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, 71 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Jean Ann Simms, 82, of Highland Heights, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

She was a retired employee of Hyde Park Clothing Co.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Simms, and a sister, Rita Ratliff of Florence.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Jayten Scott Smith, 2 days, of Covington, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Survivors include his parents, Troy R. Gabbard Sr. of Dayton, Ohio, and Angela G. Smith of Covington; sisters, Alexis N. Baker and Alyssa B. Smith, both at home; and grandparents, Bruce W. Smith Sr. of Falmouth and Nancy C. Smith of Covington.

Graveside services will be at noon Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Naomi Wilson, 83, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
