Edgar Dority, dedicated 77 years to church work
In many ways, Edgar B. "Ed" Dority's life revolved around the Latonia Baptist Church.
The Latonia resident, who died Sunday at 89, joined the church in May 1923, when he was 8. His service to the church began four years later, when he shoveled coal for the furnace to help his mother, the church custodian.
As a young man, he printed the church's weekly bulletin at home, setting each line of type by hand.
In March 1941, he married
Opal Dossey, the daughter of the church's pastor. They were married
for nearly 64 years.
"He was a special husband. He gave me everything I wanted, " Mrs. Dority said.
They never had any children of their own, but poured their lives into the children of others.
From 1942 to 1968, Mr. Dority led the church's training unions, a Sunday night Bible class for school-age children. He often performed a skit for the youth in his "Dr. Cut-em-up-ski" character.
For 37 years, he taught the men's Pilot Sunday-school class at the church. He organized bowling leagues, golf outings and monthly dinners prepared by the men.
He made a lifetime habit of visiting class members and friends. "We helped a lot of families less fortunate than us, " his widow said.
The transportation industry was another constant in Mr. Dority's life.
After earning certificates in traffic and leadership from the University of Cincinnati, in 1935 he went to work as a call boy for the L&N; Railroad. In 1946 he became chief clerk at the Great Northern Railroad, and later became district sales manager for the Soo Line Railroad in Cincinnati.
Almost immediately after he retired from the Soo Line in 1980, he became vice president of sales for Custom Freight Sales in Dayton, Ohio. He worked there until December 2003, and enjoyed every minute of it, his widow said.
"He was very friendly, " she said. "He loved to work with people."
