Virginia Schmitz, first Park Hills councilwoman

Virginia Schmitz was Park Hills' first female council member.

In the late 1970s, she looked at the issues facing the city and decided she could help resolve them, her husband, Joseph John Schmitz, said.

"The councilmen at the time thought the world of her, " he said.

Mrs. Schmitz, 76, of Park Hills, died at 7:14 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was primarily a homemaker, but she also spent a substantial amount of time volunteering at St. Agnes and Notre Dame schools.

Her husband said she would work in the office or be a substitute teacher. "She was always helping out, " he said.

Mrs. Schmitz also enjoyed spending time with her eight grandchildren.

"They were very fond of her, " he said. "She'd play cards with them. Any kind of games they wanted to play, she'd play with them."

Her main hobby was reading, her husband said. She'd read anything that struck her interest. "I think the public library would feel like they lost a real customer, " he said.

She also was a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright. She belonged to the church's Altar Society and Adoration Committee.

A son, Joseph John Schmitz Jr., died in 2001.

In addition to her husband, survivors include daughters, Joanne Coombe of Glenford, Ohio, and Barbara Hendrickson of Midland, Mich.; sisters, Mary Catherine Rauch of Erlanger, Dorothy Heidrich of Edgewood and Ruth Schulte of Villa Hills; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, Ky. 41011. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Ada Back, 70, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, James Back; a stepson, Raymond E. Back of Cincinnati; a stepdaughter, Karen Napier of Independence; sisters, Jean Steder of Florence and Charlotte Turner of Demossville; a brother, Glen Williams of Covington; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.

Katherine Louise Boekley, 86, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:55 a.m. Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Andrew Boekley Sr., and a son, Kenneth Boekley, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Charmaine M. Aljets of Coon Rapids, Mich., Ruth Ann Boekley of California, Mary Hoskins of Berry and Donna Sue Sebastian of Fridley, Minn.; a son, Richard Boekley Jr. of Elk River, Minn.; a sister, Loretta Boekley of Bellevue; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor Nursing Home, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Emily Jo Brown, 86, of California, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was an employee of Shillito's department store in Cincinnati and a member of Persimmon Grove Baptist Church.

Her husband, Earl Elgin Brown, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Jo Perkins of Alexandria, Judy Weisner of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Barbara Rawe of California; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Persimmon Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Persimmon Grove Baptist Church, Persimmon Grove Pike, Alexandria, Ky. 41001; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41074. William M. Buckley Jr., 84, of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at his home.

He was a diesel supervisor with CSX Railroad, a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood and the Holy Name Society at the church, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

A son, Timothy L. Buckley, died in 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Rita E. Brossart Buckley; a son, William M. Buckley III of Villa Hills; a brother, Barry Buckley of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Jane Koester of Fort Mitchell; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Calvin "Buck" Cress Jr., 80, of Owenton, died Friday at Owenton Manor.

He was a retired controller with the Army Corps of Engineers, a member of St. Edward Church, Cynthiana, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Code Cress; and sisters, Katherine Aylor of Tavares, Fla., Helen Biel of Harrison, Ohio, Ruth Comp of Phoenix and Elizabeth Bullock of Hebron.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Verona. Gerald Holton Deatherage, 69, of Warsaw, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired real estate agent and owner of Key 2 Realty, and he was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Deatherage; sons, Jerry Deatherage of Fort Mitchell and Jason W. Deatherage of Carrollton; a daughter, Dana C. Deatherage of Milton; a stepson, Christopher Armbrecht of Ludlow; a stepdaughter, Lori Reed of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Joyce Deatherage Kirkendall of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers, George E. Deatherage Jr. and Kerry B. Deatherage, both of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Johnny L. Heitmeier, 75, of Butler, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was an employee of Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, a member of St. Peter and Paul Church, Cincinnati, and a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Garnett Heitmeier; sons, Robert Morgan of California and John Heitmeier of Butler; daughters, Diana Heitmeier of Newport, Sharon Reemly and Sandra Mullins, both of Butler; sisters, Alice Perry of Dayton and Edith Feiler of Newport; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Persimmon Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Steven Austin Hemmingway, the son of James and Betty Hemmingway of Worthville, was stillborn at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Baptist Hospital Northeast, LaGrange.

Other survivors include a brother, Chad Andrew Hemmingway, at home; and sisters, Tiffany Renee Hemmingway and Whitney May Hemmingway, both at home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Worthville Cemetery. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Clyde Lake, 87, of Covington, died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

He was a retired brakeman with the L&N; Railroad, attended Seventh Day Adventist Church in Taylor Mill, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys B. Lake; sons, David Lake of Highland Heights and Bill Dickman of Ryland Heights; daughters, Judy Lake of Covington and Brenda Geiger of Florence; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Cemetery, Corbin.

June Lockard, 72, of Florence, died at 3 a.m. Friday at her home.

She was an employee of Dillard's department store.

A daughter, Diane Spry, preceded her in death.

Sister Agnes Marian Madden, 76, of Melbourne, died Saturday at Holy Family Home, Melbourne.

She was a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence, and a biology and science teacher at many schools, including Our Lady of Providence School in Newport and Newport Central Catholic High School.

Survivors include cousins.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anne Chapel, Melbourne. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with a wake service at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Anne Convent Cemetery, Melbourne. Jesse James Moore Jr., 71, of Augusta, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday at his home.

He was a retired machinist with F.A. Neider Co., Augusta, a member of Minerva Methodist Church, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

A son, Robert Allen Moore, died in 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Moran Moore; a daughter, Margaret French of Brooksville; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.

Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Elsa Mary Reuscher, 96, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Waugaman of Newport and Marilyn Mischke of Forest Hill, Md.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. today at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m.

Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Merilyn Scott Searcy, 58, of Verona, died at 1:25 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was the former owner of Guaranteed Vinyl of Verona, a former employee of TGA Supermarkets, and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Verona, American Legion Post No. 203 Auxiliary, and the Verona Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, T.W. Searcy; sons, T.W. "Chip" Searcy Jr. of Verona, and Lee J. Searcy of Elsmere; a daughter, April Dawn Mills of Verona; brothers, William C. Scott of Leitchfield, George V. Scott of Independence, James A. Scott of Cincinnati, M.D. Scott of Goshen, Ohio, Jack R. Scott of Ocala, Fla., Kenneth E. Scott of Verona; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Her husband, Thomas Stone, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a niece, Cindy Edelen of Cincinnati, and a nephew, Ronald Cropper of Covington.

Raymond Kenneth Wilshere, of Florence, died Friday at his home.

He was a mail handler with the A&P; and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Wilshere; a son, Raymond Wilshere of Florence; daughters, Rebecca Wilshere of Florence and Regina Wilshere Work of Warsaw, Ind.; and a grandchild.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati.
