Jon 'Alligator Jack' Ziegler, custom car specialist, restorer
One year when Jon R. Ziegler Sr., was at a car show in Tennessee, he ran into the same woman in the elevator of his hotel several times. She dubbed him "Elevator Jack."
One night he ran into the woman when she'd had too much to drink, and this time, it came out "Alligator Jack." All Mr. Ziegler's friends were with him, so the nickname stuck.
It became the name of his custom car and truck restoration business in Alexandria -- Alligator Jack's Rods and Customs.
Mr. Ziegler, who died Monday at 62, moved to Alexandria from New Jersey about 17 years ago. He had worked as an auto body repairman all his life.
He set up shop in an old barn with a wood-burning stove. It soon became a place like an old general store, where customers could come and talk for hours, said his son, Jon R. Ziegler Jr., of Cold Spring.
He restored an old ice cream truck for United Dairy Farmers, which the company has featured on local billboards and television commercials. He also did custom cars for customers all over the country.
Mr. Ziegler was someone who truly loved his work, his son said. He worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
"He would go home, take a shower, eat dinner, then get up and do it again, " his son said.
Other survivors include a son, Darren S. Ziegler of California; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alexandria Funeral Home. The body will be cremated.
Memorials may be made at any Fifth Third Bank location in memory of Jon R. Ziegler Sr.
