Cathy M. Weckenbrock, talented seamstress

Cathy M. Weckenbrock was known for her expertise as a seamstress, excelling in sewing, embroidery and crocheting.
Although she trained as a medical laboratory technician and once worked in hospitals, Mrs. Weckenbrock had a flair for creating unique designs with fabric.

The owner of Cathy's by Design embroidery business, she also used her talents on a wide range of projects at home.

Mrs. Weckenbrock made embroidered shirts and jackets for students at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, where her daughters attend school, created gowns and priest's vestments, and was known for her Christening blankets that included important dates like weddings, baptisms and first communions sewn into the corners.

"Halloween was Cathy's favorite day, " said Dr. Gregory Weckenbrock, her husband of nearly 24 years. "She loved to make costumes, and she was good at it."

Mrs. Weckenbrock, 45, of Edgewood, died Wednesday at her residence after an accidental fall.

She was born in Kansas City, Mo., and after living in a Chicago suburb, she moved in 1970 to Northern Kentucky, where she attended Caywood Elementary School, Turkeyfoot Middle School and Dixie Heights High School, graduating in 1977.

While in high school, Mrs. Weckenbrock took vocational training to become a lab technician, volunteering at St. Charles Nursing Home and the former Booth Hospital in Covington, where she developed an interest in caring for patients.

She met her future husband in summer 1979 while he was doing a medical externship, and the couple married in October 1981.

They moved to Terre Haute, Ind., in 1982, and Mrs. Weckenbrock worked as a medical technician at Union Hospital.

The couple relocated to Edgewood in 1987, and Mrs. Weckenbrock stayed at home with her four children until last year, when she returned to work at Firemen's Fund Insurance Co. as an executive secretary.

She also was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Edgewood, where she was a member of the parish council.

Mrs. Weckenbrock developed various interests over the years, and pursued them with relish.

"She loved to cook, she was a master shopper, and she was a card shark at euchre, " her husband said.

Other survivors include daughters, Emily, a student at the University of Kentucky, and twins Colleen and Ellen, of Edgewood; a son, Kyle, of Edgewood; parents, Donald and Alice Williams of Erlanger; sisters, Teresa Colvin of Chicago, Donita Wade of Erlanger, and Karen Scott of Union; and numerous nieces and nephews.
