Jack O. Putnick, 64, an expert on engines
Jack O. "Big Jack" Putnick was a whiz at building and fine-tuning engines -- all kinds of engines, for airplanes, cars, boats and just about anything else.
"All his life, he was into engines, " said Mr. Putnick's wife of 42 years, Marcella "Marcy" Reams Putnick. "He loved engines. He could tell you anything about any type of engine."
Mr. Putnick, 64, of Covington, died of cancer Saturday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was a former supervisor of maintenance with Celo-Tex Corp. and the federal government's Fernald plant, a technician with Auto Zone Co., and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mr. Putnick was well known in automobile racing circles as an engine designer and drag racer. He developed and built engines for several top drivers.
As a mechanic in the Air Force, he went on test flights in newly developed aircraft to help assess engines.
"During the Vietnam War, he was sent on special, secret missions that involved aircraft, " said his wife.
"I never knew exactly where he was or what he was doing. I wouldn't hear from him for months at a time and I would call his commander and would be told, 'Don't worry. We know where he is all the time.'"
Mr. Putnick had a variety of skills besides engines.
"He could do just about anything, " said his wife. "When he was out camping, he sewed up wounds when people cut themselves with a hatchet. He even delivered a baby one time.
"He was a jack of all trades, and he lived an exciting life."
Mrs. Putnick described her husband's personality as "straight-forward."
"He didn't tell you any lies, " she said. "He was upfront with you. Everybody liked to talk to Jack because he knew what he was talking about."
